Symbolism of Color “The Masque of the Red Death” by Edgar Allan Poe is a short story that shows people they cannot cheat death, no matter how hard you try or how rich you may be. In this story Prospero has seven rooms specially decorated and coordinated by color. This is very significant to the story because of the order of the seven rooms and what colors were chosen to go in each of the rooms. There are also other key items to the story that add more symbolism such as the clock and the castle. The seven rooms and their corresponding colors represent the seven stages of life. The rooms are placed starting in the east and ending in the west, this is more symbolism for the stages of life because the sun rises in the east and sets in the west.
All people wish to avoid suffering, and those with wealth usually take too long to realize that they cannot avert it. In the short story, “The Masque of the Red Death”, Edgar Allan Poe tells the readers of death, and how the upper class deals with it. In this story, Prince Prospero and his wealthy friends hide away in a castle to evade death. This obviously does not work, as death is inevitable, but of course, they attempt to save themselves anyways. He reveals this in the book by showing all the people closed up in the abbey that belongs to Prince Prospero. They are trying to escape the “Red Death” and think that they can escape the death by hiding away in the abbey. They manage to stay safe for six months but in the end they all die after the stroke of midnight during the masquerade ball Prince Prospero puts on from the Red Death itself which appears after midnight and leaves no survivors in the end. After Prospero confronts the mysterious figure, he is slaughtered. “And one by one dropped the revellers in the blood-bedewed halls of their revel, and died each in the despairing posture of his fall.” Soon after Prospero’s ignorant death, the cloaked figure catches up with the revellers, killing them off as well. This storyline written by Poe, shows that he feels that fate cannot be changed, in the end, you will die. His character Prospero and the revelers represented the fact that people believe they can change their fate, escape death, but Poe created a character, the red death, or
