Relationships usually represent union of two individuals, most of the time male and female, and if the unity is broken it is more likely to leads to separation . The short stories “Hills like white elephants” by Ernest Hemingway and “Little Things” by Raymond Carver display a conflict between two young couples. In the case of both stories the couples are at the verge of separation, because of their conflicting views and feelings. The stories “Hills Like White elephants” and “Little Things”, by Ernest Hemingway and Raymond Carver, show separation of a couple, using the style elements of setting and symbolism. The authors Ernest Hemingway and Raymond Carver use setting to show the theme of separation between the two couples. For example, Both stories provide symbols that represent the separation through the distance between the characters. First, from the short story “Little Things ”, Carver starts the scene where the man is packing his bags, note that the place where the two individuals are is extremely important because it a representation of their feelings, “He was in the bedroom pushing clothes into a suitcase when she came to the door” (Carver 1). Immediately we can see that there is a distance between the man and the woman, not only does this show the physical distance of characters but also symbolises the emotional detachment between the two couples. Thus, because of their lack of communication towards each other it ends up killing, or seriously injuring, the baby. Additionally, from the short story “Hills Like White Elephants”, we can also see a separation between the two characters when the author describes the setting. The setting is at a train station “between two lines of rails” (Hemingway 475), and Hemingway purposely chooses to add this in the description of the setting to portray a symbolic meaning. The two railings, most likely going in opposite directions, symbolise the different mindsets of the man and the woman, which emphasizes the void between the couple. Given these points it is understood that the authors use symbolism to show separation between the couple. All things considered the authors of “Hills Like White Elephants” by Ernest hemingway and “Little Things” by Raymond Carver it is understood that show the theme of separation of a couple, using the style elements of setting and symbolism. By the descriptions of the setting and what they represent, to the symbolic understanding of certain contextual evidence. Knowing these things helps develop a better understanding of the story, and obtain a deeper comprehension of the author’s
