Become A Grown Up

"Whats gonna go down, is already set"- K-Boy. The background of this is when Bobby was talking about "Fate" and what he thinks it is. I myself think that fate does exist, and that your existence is planned out, but you are only put on this earth for as long as you are needed in the universe. Although others believe that your choices can change your fate even though that those choices are your fate those were planned out, you can't change fate. In this novel Angela Johnson shows that Bobby comes of age by using many many symbols. These symbols are the Basketball shows childhood, The Note is like a get out of life free card, The arcade is symbolic for Freedom/Childhood.

Bobby's childhood is just like the basketball, he sets the basketball on the floor and it just rolls away. This also symbolizes coming of age because when your childhood is rolling away you know that you are beginning to become older. One quote that is good for this is "It's time to grow up, too late, your out of time. Be a grown up." This is a good quote because it shows that as soon as that ball begins rolling, you can claw at it all that you want, but you can't stop it all that you can do is grow up. You don't have a lot of time to grow up but you have to anyway, you don't have a choice. The basketball represents Bobby's childhood as it is rolling away and that he can't stop it so he must accept it and grow up.

When Bobby was having trouble in his life, he wanted a pass. That pass shows that he wants a get out of life free card, so he wouldn't have to deal with it, a sick pass so he didn't have to do anything. This represents coming of age because Bobby didn't want to come of age he wanted to be a kid again, he wanted his innocence. Bobby was wanting to ask his mom do give him a note for school because of all the things that are happening or that he felt "sick" and wanted a doctors note. The note represents Bobby not wanting to come of age because he didn't want to grow up he didn't want to lose his
