Overview: Swift Transportation Company (NYSE: SWFT) is a national leader in transportation services. Headquartered in Phoenix, Arizona, SWFT was founded in 1966 and did an initial public offering in 1990(1). The company operates a fleet consisting of over 16,000 tractor-trailer trucks and 50,000 trailers. Its 22,000 employees help service 40 key terminal freight hubs across the United States and Mexico (Figure 1)(2). Products / Service Description: SWFT identifies four main operating segments: truckload, dedicated, refrigerated, and intermodal(3). The most profitable being truckload which generates over 50 percent of operating revenue (Figure 2). Its next largest customers are FedEx Corp, UPS, and Caterpillar Inc however they make up a small portion of revenue(2). SWFT’s largest clientele base exists in the Fortune 500 and other large corporations which require numerous shipping locations and wide variety of shipping needs (Figure 3). The main attraction to SWFT is its competitive pricing, versatile functionality, stability, and access to a wide variety of freight terminals. Corporate Governance & Regulations: David Jackson is the President and Chief Executive Officer of SWFT (Figure 4). Previously Chief Executive Officer at Knights Transportation he has he has over 15 years of truckload industry knowledge. Jerry Moyes, former CEO and founder of SWFT, retired at the end of 2016. Moyes will serve as a non-employee consultant until the end of 2019(7). SWFT complies with all regulations and standards. FMCSA or the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration is mainly responsible for regulations implemented and upheld by SWFT. Recent regulation changes such as the ELD Mandate to require electronically logging hours of service, provisions to the hours of service policy, and overtime pay rules have the potential to impact SWFT(8).
