Sustainable transport is defined in the Bogota’s Declaration (2011) as:
“The provision of services and infrastructure for the mobility of people and goods needed for economic and social development and improved quality of life and competitiveness. These services and transport infrastructure provide secure, reliable, economical, efficient, equitable and affordable access to all, while mitigating the negative impacts on health and the environment locally and globally, in the short, medium and long term without compromising the development of future generations."

Sustainable transportation is an aspect of global sustainability, which involves meeting present needs without reducing the ability of future generations to meet their needs. ii. Sustainability has three components: environment, society, and economy iii. Environment refers to the surroundings of humans and other life forms that support them and limit their activity according to basic physical laws. Environmental factors affect present well-being and determine most of the legacy we leave our descendants. iv. Society is a complex of human interactions and how they are organized. Humans have evolved to be mostly dependent on their societies; thus the sustainability of societies is a necessary condition for meeting human needs.
v. Societal factors are important for sustainability because they determine the present quality of life and because they can be a major component of the legacy to future generations. vi. The non-motorized transportation sustains the social harmonization and inclusion, alleviates discrepancies and inequities (between driver/passenger, expensive/cheap car owner, and passenger/pedestrian), and facilitates mobility of social disadvantaged individuals and personal interaction of peoples in a stronger way than motorized transportation. It can be sum up the results of different studies related to health effects of walking and cycling, including them in economic analysis of transport infrastructures development
