“Ma’am, the results of the tests have come back. Your baby girl will have autism.” These words changed Susan McRae’s life forever. Her husband, Richard, immediately started crying. Susan and Richard came to this moment because during an ultrasound two weeks ago, there was a dot spotted on their developing child, Emma,’s brain. Their doctor ran a test and the results had come back; their baby was going to have autism. The times became tough for the couple. Before they became married each of them knew about their difference in opinion about special needs people. Richard believed all special needs people were a mistake, but Susan believed that everyone deserved a chance and she should love them. After the test, the family seems to be fine and all is oddly calm in the McRae house. Two short weeks later, Emma brings a white, slick envelope addressed to Mr. and Mrs. McRae in from the mailbox. Immediately, Susan rips open the package and reads the results: “Emma McRae has scored a 175 on her Intelligence Quotient Test. This falls into the range of genius.” Richard goes into disbelief; he realizes Emma is now signed up for the Wesley Academy Gifted Program, but does not congratulate Emma or show her that he is proud in any way. Six weeks into the gifted program, Emma brings home another letter. Ms. Abrams has recommended for Emma to look into attending the Jules Genius Camp. According to the letter, the head of the camp has reached out to Mr. Chale, Emma’s gifted teacher, about her scores and has given her a full scholarship to the camp. Emma would leave for the camp in two weeks and stay for three days. Before asking her husband, Susan signs Emma up; she did not ask her husband, knowing that he would disapprove.
