What sources are the biggest problem in surface water pollution? types of pollution:

There are a number of major types of water pollution. The polluters are:
- petroleum products
- Pesticides and herbicides
- Heavy metals
- hazardous wastes
- fertilizer
- sediments
- infectious organisms.

Petroleum products which among other things are used for fuel, lubricant and plastics, can get into the water through the discharge of ships and tankers, and the leaking from pipelines and underground storage tanks. Oil may also contain hazardous polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), highly toxic and highly persistent chemical compounds. Oil in the feathers of birds or other animals is often fatal to them. An oil spill near the coast is often a catastrophic

by combining targeted BMP implementation strategies only in small parts of the catchment.

By using Best Management Practices there was looked at the cost effectiveness in reducing sediment ,nitrates and phosphorus pollution which will get into the surface water via fertilizer. This fertilizer is used by farmers and the use of filter strips at the edge of a corn field should prevent the loss of all these nutrients in the surface water. This method proved effective since it reduced the overall pollution and it shows that by combining targeted BMP implementation strategies, multiple pollution types can be reduced at small cost.

By purifying the sewer water before it enters back into the surface water.

After the dirt and sand are removed from the water by purification, the waste water is put into aeration tanks. In here, the bacteria and oxygen is added. These bacteria need oxygen to live so that is the reason it is added. The bacteria do the real work. They eliminate the tiny dirt particles from water that are still left. The only thing that is left after this is sludge. This gets fermented for power to do the purification all over again. This way it is a very sustainable process. The clean water is returned to the nature.
