Surf culture What is youth culture? Youth culture is the way adolescents live, the things they create, and how they change things for the rest of the world. It has changed many time throughout the years, and continues to change. I think the most important part of youth culture is how it influences people. One of the best examples has to be surf culture. Surf culture truly shows how it started and how it changed the world with its influence and upbringing and how it’s with us today. . Surfing had caught on with youth and just exploded to the rest of the country back in the day. Surfing originated in Hawaii, and others became interested after witnessing the hawaiians surfing out there. Captain James Cook documents the people of Hawaii riding waves standing up on boards. Later Queen liliuokalani sends her three adopted sons to Santa Cruz, California and they became the first surfers in the United States. Duke Kahanamoku comes along and becomes the father of modern surfing. Duke K was a famous Olympic athlete and causes Surfing to begin to rise in popularity. During that time there was a plethora of surf music and movies being made as a result of its popularity. On its rise surfing opens up some businesses for clothes and boards. The evolution of boards started changing due to so many people falling in with surf culture. The culture really helps develop the world around it. Also at this time many famous surfers take advantage of the culture to grow and become huge figures, guys like Mickey Dora and Phil Edwards. As surfing becomes more popular, it takes away from the humble beginnings, which angers some of the originals.
