The Titan’s Curse is the third novel in Rick Riordan ‘Percy Jackson and the Olympians’ series. Considered to be a fantasy adventure book written for young teens, it was nominated for several prestigious awards. Action packed with a plot based on Greek Mythology, this book has similar characteristics to the famous Harry Potter, The Hobbit and The Chronicles of Narnia series. It follows the story of Percy Jackson, a half mortal and half Greek god due to his father, Poseidon, being the god of the sea and his mother a mere mortal. Already travelled on various quests to rescue other demi-gods, Percy spent his summers at Camp Half-Blood, where he met Thalia, Annabeth and Grover, who become his best friends and accompanied him on every mission. Walter Winchell once said, “Never above you. Never below you. Always beside you.” The movie Remember The Titans gives truth to this quote. Produced in 2000, this movie stars actors such as Denzel Washington, Will Patton and Wood Harris. One may think that this movie is just about football but its depth is so much more. Taking place in Alexandria, Virginia, race mixing is unheard of until 1971 when T.C. Williams High School is established. When the schools are integrated a new football coach is brought in and the community and students are not happy about it, as the new coach is an African American. This movie shows how people overcome adversity and unite as one to achieve a common goal.
The Sirens of Titan Marek Vit "It took us that long to realize that a purpose of human life, no matter who is controlling it, is to love whoever is around to be loved." (Vonnegut:220) The Sirens of Titan is Kurt Vonnegut's second novel. He has written it in 1959, seven years after his previous Player Piano. It has been described as a pure science fiction novel and, after only one reading, it really can be considered to be one. The intricate plot and fascinating detail may obscure the serious intent of the novel.
I like the way the author, Rick Riordan, made mythology come to life in “The Blood of Olympus”. The book brings an interesting spin on Greek and Roman mythology. Besides the mythology, I really like the character Percy, who used to be the main character in the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series. I also personally enjoyed how well written the book was. Altogether, I liked the mythology, Percy, and the well written story that the author Rick has created.

Tartarus was not just another realm within the classical world - it was a land beyond Hades, beyond the Underworld, lying as far below hell as the Earth lay below Heaven; is was said that an anvil would fall for nine days before reaching it. It was a land of exile, a prison for those who displeased the current ruling hierarchy of Gods and divine beings. Uranus imprisoned his first children there; the Titans, having overthrown their father, threw the Cyclops into Tartarus - only to take their place once Zeus' rebellion disposed of the despotic giants. It soon became a place of such fear that the mere threa...
Percy Jackson is the main character in this story, who is a demi god, who mortals are after. His name is short for Perseus and his father is one of the big three gods, Poseidon. He is suffering from dyslexia and ADHD, which could be deliberately added to the character by Riordan, to show he is meant to be a hero, and not to do well in school. This shows that school is not what he is good at, and he is destined to be a hero and save people. The character Grover, who plays Percy’s best friend, parallels a Satyr who is human from the waist up and goat from the waist down and is a companion of wine God, Dionysus, who we later learn, is the camp director for Half-Blood Camp.
A 2000 film, Remember the Titans, is based on a true story. This movie portrays an African American Coach Herman Boone played by Denzel Washington and a successful Caucasian high school coach Bill Yoast played by Will Patton. This movie takes place during period when schools in Virginia were segregated. It wasn’t until the early 70’s when a federal mandate came into play requiring that two schools in Alexandria, Virginia integrate its students. As a part of this change, the Alexandria school board had also decided to hire on an African American football coach, Herman Boone.
There is a copious amount of major characters in the story. Some of them include Odysseus, the main character, who is a soldier and returns home after a twenty-year absence. Some of his family includes Laertes, his father, Penelope, his wife, and Telemachus, his son. There are many gods that Odysseus must battle on his journey home, including Zeus, who is said to be father of all gods, and Poseidon, the god of the ocean who punishes Odysseus and his crew by giving them a very difficult trip home after they blind his son, Polyphemus, or the Cyclops by blinding him after stabbing him in the eye. Another major character is Calypso, a sea goddess who is in love with Odysseus.
The Classical mythology contains tales and epics of the ancient Greek and roman literatures and myths. On the other hand, Homer’s two epic poems, the Iliad relates to the events of the Trojan War while the Odyssey details Odysseus expedition after the war. Homer’s epic poems, the Odyssey and the Iliad present a major part of ancient history as modern fictional heroic stories. In ancient Greek, heroes were humans who were depicted to possess superhuman abilities. A key example in the classical mythology is Akhilles who is later known in Homer’s Iliad as Achilles. Achilles is he greatest hero of the Iliad whereas Odysseus is the greatest hero of the Odyssey. The greatest heroes from classic mythology and the modern fictional hero’s stories are mortal, and subject to death. The Odyssey and the Iliad marks the beginning of modern fictional literature.
Cronus is the primordial god of time and was the king of the Titans and was viewed as an all-devouring, destructive force. He was born of Ouranos and Gaea and was the youngest and most powerful of the titans. “After them was born Cronus, the wily, youngest and most terrible of her children, and he hated his lusty sire.”(Atsmon, 2017). His symbol is depicted as either a Sickle or a scythe and is the patron of the harvest. His other duties are the King of the Universe, King of the Titans, to rule the Golden Age, and to rule the Isles of the Blessed in the Underworld.

After a few days of being at the camp he realizes what he has to do. Remember the Titans is a film from 2000 displaying a true story of a racially divided football team from the 1970s. The movie highlights the relationships of the black and white people, and how they learned to interact with each other in a time when this was not the way of life. It brings up a number of questions throughout, of what is right and what is wrong, and really challenges the characters, making it a very interesting movie to watch. I have seen this movie many times, and each time I feel like I get something new out of it. It is a movie that can be used as a teaching tool, it does a great job of interpreting not only what was happening in the United States of America at that time, but social psychology concepts through real life situations.
The fact that Percy Jackson has friends is incredible. It is an unshakable fact that any friend of his within a ten-mile radius will be in a life or death situation with him by dinner, and they are not always as lucky as he is. However, that is getting ahead of ourselves. Over the course of the five-part contemporary young adult series, Percy Jackson & The Olympians, the titular character, Percy Jackson, must embrace his Greek God parentage and save Olympus with the help of his fellow demigods. The aim of this paper is to discuss his Hero’s Journey throughout the series, provide an in-depth character analysis, and draw parallels between Percy and the three classic Greek heroes of mythology: Perseus, Theseus, and Hercules.
