The world has a general problem with illegal immigration. The country that had the most illegal immigrants, surveyed, was the United States. Even though some the date surveyed is slightly outdated, it shows how the numbers are actually climbing. In 2001, the percentage of illegal immigrants living in the U.S. was 3%. It dropped the next year ever so slightly, and ever since then has raised up to 3.8% in 2010 (Immigration ProCon). There are very strong statistics that one can no longer avoid confronting. Not only is it a problem in the U.S., but other countries such as Spain, New England, Greece, Hungry, France, Austria, and many others don’t even reach over 1.5% (Immigration ProCon). The United States was formed by the immigration of many people from all over the world. Americans take pride in knowing that we are a people of vast ethnic backgrounds and culture. However, at the present time, the flow of illegal immigration, as well as a large influx of other legal immigrants is placing a strain on our land of "huddled masses." Legal immigration to the United States can easily be handled and is welcomed by most Americans. However, the flow of illegal immigrants, especially from Mexico, must be stemmed, due to the strain it is placing on the government, (at the local, state and federal level), as well as the general population. Illegal immigrants are costing the United States over 24 billion dollars a year in taxpayers money (National Review 12.13.93). Something must be done to reduce the flow of illegal immigration into the United States. The focus of this paper will be the problems caused by and possible solutions to the problem of illegal immigration.
This year in the United States, thousands of undocumented illegal immigrants entered the United States. “Argument against undocumented immigration is that local, state, and federal governments are burdened with increased costs through their utilization of educational and social systems such as primary and secondary education, health care programs, emergency rooms, welfare, and other anti-poverty programs to which they do not contribute through taxes (Beccera).” Financially strained social services funds are being spent on illegal immigrants, overcrowded schools are filled with undocumented children, and illegal immigrants take majority of low wage jobs. Something has to be done to remedy these problems in Texas.
Among the problems that face our nation, illegal immigration seems to be one of the most regarded. “In 2005, there were 12.7 million people classified as refugees in the world. Refugees are forced to migrate because of danger in their own country.” (Cath Senker 12) Some push to end it while others want to have it legalized or less strict. There are many points that are argued on this topic. Although immigrants support the economy, they should have to pay taxes. Illegal immigration should be stopped or slowed until the legalization process and borders are improved. Due to the fact, that taxpayers are the backbone of our economy and nation as a whole.
Every year, hundreds of thousands of immigrants, legal and illegal, from around the world, come to the United States. These immigrants come because they want a chance at a better life; others are refugees, escaping persecution and civil wars in their home country. Many people believe the United States is the best place to go. There is more freedom, protection, and benefits, which seems like a good deal to immigrants. But the large number of immigration is affecting the current citizens of the United States. Taxpayers are forced to pay for the welfare and schooling for many of these immigrants, some who are illegal aliens. Some citizens believe that immigration can be hazardous to the environment. Others blame crime, poverty, and overpopulation on immigration. About sixty-eight million immigrants have been added to the United States since 1970, and it is estimated that 130 million people will be added over the next fifty years. The government has tried somewhat to restrict immigration but the laws are still too lenient. Nearly every other advanced country in the world is moving quickly towards stabilized population or has already achieved it. The United States is moving towards it very slowly. This country would have to reduce immigration down to 255,000 a year to do this (Beck 1). If nothing is done to stabilize the immigration to this country, what will become of population in the next decade? The population will continue to grow even faster - not due to births, but to massive immigration to this country. Immigration can become a serious problem to this country if the government does not produce stricter laws.
Learning our history with this problem is the first step in figuring out a solution. The second is to understand the pros and cons of immigration to make it possible to create an action plan. The cons are the same gripes that are always associated with immigrants, the main one being the shortage of jobs. Many Americans believe halting immigration will help the problem out. Other countries see the United States as a land of opportunity and freedom. Because of this, Americans should be honored and willing to share their concept of freedom and equality with others. Instead, immigrants are forced to jump through hoops and struggle with red tape in hopes of experiencing American life. Currently, this hyped preconception is causing the immigration rate to become out of hand. With the illegal immigrate population growing by over 300,000 annually, it has developed into a national controversy. Like pouring sugar into a cup of coffee: some people don’t want any at all, while others think “the more the merrier”. Over the years, the population of immigrants has grown immensely, resulting in the currently controversial issue of illegal immigration. The Immigration and Naturalization Act (INA) serves as a gatekeeper for the United States’s borders by determining who may enter, how long they may stay and when they must leave. They provide an annual worldwide limit of 675,000 permanent immigrants, with certain exceptions for close family member (AIC 2016). However, when we take a look at the total number of illegal aliens and immigrants the numbers are far more impacting and put the american workforce in danger for its natural born citizens. The number of illegal immigrants in the United States totaled 11.3 million in 2014, outnumbering the 9.6 million Americans who were unemployed in the same year, according to da from Pew Research Center and the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Unauthorized immigrants make up 5.1% of the workforce. This is a problem. We have people that are coming into our nation that was built and united by our founding fathers for other individuals in other nations to flee over into the US and steal jobs right underneath our own citizens feet. Illegal immigration was an issue in the past and is a pressing problem in the present. The U.S. Government has been trying to find a resolution to this issue for years. The United States approved the Immigration Reform and Control Act in 1986, which allowed the American Government to punish American companies that consciously employed illegal immigrants (Nadadur 1037-1052). The United States’ Government Immigration Reform and Control Act has been unsuccessful in controlling illegal immigration. It is estimated that illegal immigration into the U.S. has a yearly interval of three hundred fifty thousand people (Rousmaniere 24-25). It is apparent that the 1986 act was not able to keep a handle on illegal immigration. Illegal immigration continues due to the fact that immigrants only take the jobs available to them, which in turn helps support the United States’ economy, so measures should not be taken to halt immigration.
Immigration is a prevalent issue in the United States and must be addressed in order to open more jobs for Americans and stop illegal immigrants from entering. In 2008 there were roughly 11.9 million immigrants living the in the United States. President Obama said that immigration reform would be a priority in his 1st year in office. Immigrants are currently held in prisons and jail cells and the government wants to make it more civil. They are living in substandard conditions and often mistreated. Immigration need to be kept under control and have constant upgrades in security. Foreigners’ can complement our workforce, but now they are taking American jobs and lower pays.
There are currently 11.7 million immigrants living in the U.S. The United States is now again being named the land of immigrants. The new century has been introduced to the illegal immigrant. They are desperate to get into the American culture and are forced to disobey the laws of government to assimilate themselves in America. People come over because they have family, jobs or want a better life. This may cause some problems for Americans. Certain Americans believe immigration will cause the economy to drop, drop to wages, and job loss due to cheap labor, etc. But no one has thought of a solution for immigration that will work effectively.
Illegal immigrants hold over 14 million jobs in the U.S. These jobs should belong to some of the 17 million unemployed Americans. If U.S. citizens would take these jobs unemployment would be at around 2% which is considered full employment. Not only do illegal immigrants take jobs, but they also receive more benefits compared to the taxes they pay. Another negative effect is that many industries pay illegal immigrants a lower wage saving money on the higher wages a native would earn. Even though illegal immigrants bring some rewards the overall negative effects of lower wages, tax burdens, and less available jobs is why illegal immigration should be stopped.
The issue on illegal immigrants has been facing America over so many years “What is illegal immigration? This is the migration of foreigners to a country who are not legally eligible to migrate or extend their stay for more than a given period yet they refuse to leave. According to the United States Department of Home Security, people involved in illegal immigration are those non US residents who either crossed the borders without inspection or people who are given visas to stay for a while but instead of leaving, they overstay.” There is no reliable count of illegal immigration. Illegal immigration is a major problem which most of developed countries face in current economy. It has been major political issue for the political parties (republicans and democrats in America) and over years each party has different agenda to address the issue. Illegal immigration can be defined as movement of people from a source country to a destination country without any legal documents and violates destination countries immigration laws. People have moved across lands over years to escape a war situation or to get better facilities in different country.
