The Alexiad, written by Anna Comena is a vivid description of her father Emperor Alexis Comenna I and his rule and events associated with him from 1081–1118. The book is a chronicle as it a historical account of her father and his rule, however it is incredibly bias but can be used by historians to understand the Byzantine perspective on many events during Alexis’s rule. In the book Anna outlines her father’s life before he is emperor in book one, which talks about his early years as a solider in service to Emperor Romanus Diogenes and his years as a general in service to the Eastern Roman Empire, throughout the early chapters in the book up until book three when he becomes emperor after a successful coup against the previous regime. She also sought to finish her late husband, Caesar Nicephorus’s about Emperor Alexius’s life before his death. Anna as a Byzantine princess was granted a great education that was similar to men in high status within the Eastern Roman society, but better than most women and was very active in Eastern Roman politics. After her husband’s death Anna would retire to the convent of Kecharitomene, where she stayed until her death in 1154. Thus, her education and time in solitude allowed her to write the Alexiad. Through writing the Alexiad, she became an influential person of the twelfth century which was impressive as she was a female. Aspects of Byzantine historiography are that historical works are in the forms of chronicles of events that revolved around individuals with unique characteristics. The focus of an individual is clearly shown as Emperor Alexis Comnena I is in a way the protagonist of the Alexiad as he is the central character throughout the story. Emperor Comnena, throughout the book is shown to be a figure with no vices and is even comparable to Jesus Christ himself. The book, while bias can yield a lot of information to historians. The information that can be gained is Eastern Roman history under Emperor Alexis Comnena I and what transpired under his reign. The Byzantine perspective of the First Crusade and the incoming crusaders is also displayed by the Alexiad, therefore can yield useful information to historians exploring the First Crusade or something similar. The problem is using the Alexiad as source in understanding Eastern Roman history is that the book was wrote with a bias bent, therefore some parts history may have been tampered with and that Anna Comnena is telling her story purely though stories and her family history with no other sources. However, while flawed in some aspects the Alexiad is still regarded as a historical piece and relay important information is analyzed
