Pre-ESS Analysis- 1906 San Francisco Earthquake The 1906 San Francisco Earthquake hit the Northern California coastline. The San Andreas fault shook 296 miles of the coast causing major damage throughout San Francisco, destroying about 80% of the city. Fires broke out throughout the city that lasted for several days. This was one of the worst Earthquakes recorded in history, killing 3,000 people.("The Great 1906 San Francisco Earthquake") Problem Statement: Earthquakes are a natual part of the environment. All of the falling debris caused concerete dust to fill the air resulting in air pollution. The thousands of fires that broke out made smoke and debris travel for miles causing air pollution.Spilling of hazardous chemicals contaminating water supply, wildlife homes, and food supply.("The Great 1906 San Francisco Earthquake") E>H Debris from the Earthquake falls into the ponds,lakes, and rivers. The spilling of hazardous chemicals makes its way to the water supply as well. This kills wildlife that live in the water system, as well as the ones that use it for water or their food supply. Tsunamis caused by the Earthquake leads to flooding along the coastal environment. This damages any homes. Flooding caused new lakes or sag ponds on the land. Increasing groundwater flow from springs and displacing stream channel. ("Flood Consequences") E>B Fires kill plants and trees leaving wildlife without homes and food. Large fires cause lots of smoke and air pollution. Fires are devestating but also have some positive features. Shifting plates may makes fossil fuels such as petroleum and natural gas easier to access by burning off the old layers. FIres cause renewal and change.
