In Primo Levi’s memoir, Survival in Auschwitz(If this is a Man), he tells his whole story about his time in Auschwitz from the first day to the last. This is a life changing story about how the holocaust affected a man and the struggle that is was to get through the camps. Levi is haunted by his experience in the camp, he writes as a form of therapy. Because of his background in science, most of Levi’s writing is straight narration with sprinklings of emotion thrown into it. This book is a complete collection of Primo Levi himself since it is able to capture his spirit and his brain. Levi uses his titles and allusions in order to put emphasize on his purpose. Levi titles chapters in a very telling way, his titles include those like “The Journey” and “The Side of Good and Evil”. These chapters are very effective in the way that it right away informs the reader of what is in each chapter. However, the last chapter, “The Story of Ten Days”, is the most impactful chapter because instead of giving a clear picture of what direction the chapter was going to take like the rest of his chapter titles. This title leaves it up in the air about what will be going on, the only real piece of information being that the chapter is about ten days. In reality the chapter is about Levi’s last ten days in the camp where the other prisoners and him that were too sick to march out of the camp were left alone and waiting to be rescued. This gives Levi time to reflect on what is happening and come to the realization that “[he] [has] never [understood] so clearly as at that moment how laborious is the death of a man” (Levi 122). Levi puts into perspective that death from illness is not like the glamorized version it is in books and movies but that it is a slow, painful process that could take months or even in some cases years. When Levi compares death to a laborious task it really highlights the toll that is taken on the body when a human is so close to death they cannot even move. Primo Levi’s tales of his labors in “Survival in Auschwitz” connected Marx’s ideas with work under extreme and unique circumstances. In the Lager, workers suffered extreme working conditions, were deskilled in labor, became one with the masses, and were dehumanized. Through Marx’s four estrangements (estrangement of man from the product of his labor, estrangement of man from the act of labor, estrangement of man from humanity, and the estrangement of man from man), it became evident the ways in which the Holocaust is a product of a heightened version of capitalist modernity.
From the first sentence of the Preface to Survival in Auschwitz, we learn that Primo Levi attributes his survival in the concentration camp to luck, or his “good fortune to be deported to Auschwitz only in 1944” (9). It was because of luck that Levi had a chemistry background, qualifying him to spend portions of the day during the most brutal months of his last winter in Auschwitz in the chemistry laboratory, and because of luck that he formed and sustained relationships with Alberto and Lorenzo. Levi perhaps considered himself lucky most for having withstood “selection”—the method the camp guards used to choose prisoners to die instantly in the gas chambers. Levi writes, “[t]he fact that I was not selected depended above all on chance” (125).
