Odysseus is an epic hero of the epic The Odyssey. He goes to Troy to fight in the Trojan War. After ten years of fighting, Odysseus has won and is on his way home. The Odyssey is about Odysseus’ journey home. Odysseus and Nelson Mandela, our modern hero. The Heroes Journey is a pattern in a story that is recognized by Joseph Campbell. It appears in dramas, myths, and many other narratives. Both fiction, such as the character of Odysseus, and the real-life heroes, such as Nelson Mandela, endure aspects of the Heroes Journey. One of the aspects of the Heroes Journey that both real-life and fiction characters experience is Helpers and Mentors. Odysseus had many Helpers and Mentors like Athena and Hermes. Odysseus encounters this step when he wants Circe to let him go. “They stay for one year, until Odysseus finally begs her to let them go home. She replies that they must first visit the land of the dead and hear a prophecy from the ghost of Tiresias” (10. Paraphrase). He is taking a risk because he is going to the underworld and he and his crew might never come out. Like Odysseus, Mandela also encounters this step of the Heroes Journey. He encounters this step when he and his organization was trialed for violence against the South African government and was sentenced to go to prison for life. During his time in prison, police raided the ANC and arrested more leaders of the organization. Mandela was moved to many other locations. Mandela had a lot of support through South Africa and other countries. “A massive 'Release Mandela Campaign' was launched in 1982, in South Africa and abroad. A lot of foreign countries put pressure on the South African government to release Mandela, who at that point was the world's most famous political prisoner” (South Africa). Both Odysseus and Nelson Mandela have endured aspects of the Heroes Journey like Helpers and Mentors, Ordeal, and Test, Allies, and Enemies. Mandela and Odysseus have gone through these steps of the Heroes Journey because he has had helpers, tests, enemies, and bad experiences. Like Odysseus and Nelson Mandela, I too have many challenges I go through each day but not to the degree of Odysseus’ and Mandela’s challenges.
