The fancy American Dream has drawn people from all over the world to the United States to push for their upward social mobility. They have a dream and they want to make it come true. At this time Immigrants, into the major cities of the U.S, making them a melting pot. That melting pot has a different ethnic, social and cultural background, some of which contradict each other, while others are very harmonious. Race is often an obstacle to cultural communication and understanding. For this problem, Sherman Alexie his short story “Gentrification”, and Alex Tizon, with his story “Land of the Giants”, have a lot to say about how race is Obstacle to intercultural communication and understanding and that affect people misunderstand.

In “Land of The Giants”, Tizon talks about his race and his tendency to white culture. Tizon’s parents’ extreme idolization of the white culture and white everything. For Tizon’s parent’s they thinks white is symbol the nobility they yearn for white they even wants to be a white. For example Tizon’s father tries to massage his nose in order to make it look more Aquiline and more western. At the same time this change also happened to Tizon when he used to “work on becoming an American, to be in some ways more American than my American friends” and “felt embarrassed to have been a believer” I think “White” this word them is a simple, the symbol of status. In a word from the title the “land of the giants” I think the meaning of that is a huge world. As the author said he thinks they are small and pockets-out immigrant poor. He feeling he is small no matter is Physical or psyche. So the author is trying to be a American be a real American but in fact he cannot fit into the white.
