Co Author Steven Cohen expresses his thoughts and view on why he believes the government is in a perpetual crisis. He expresses that because the government is seen by the public as incompetent inefficient, and corrupt, the government does not receive the acknowledgement it needs to better service its imagine, therefore continuing the negative outlook of government ability. Cohen gives an example of the New York parks and recreation as an example of government management failure and the publics lack of perspective on the government. During an emergency or crisis, the public turns to the government for a solution. Cohen gives examples of how the government is inefficient with the spending of money. This is especially when the money goes to companies such as Solyndra. According to Cohen Solyndra filed for bankruptcy on a $528 million loan from the government and was still bailed out during the recession through the stimulus package. Because Solyndra was also a fund raiser to the Obama 2008 presidential campaign. The standards would include listening to managers and ideas that they have to improve performance. It is understood that not all suggestions can be implemented because regulations that may exist with the organization but it is important to let staff know that they are important and heard. This week it has been discussed how public and non-profit organizations are more complex than that of the private sector and how public and non-profit organizations goals are not as defined because they are more task oriented. Setting short term goals that may even be daily or weekly goals can help the organizations accomplish these goals. As an employee and leader in a public organization I understand how doing a task on a daily basis can cause complacency and take the importance out of the task itself.
