A Separate Peace is John Knowles’ famous book set in World War II, which talks about the amazing friendship between two young teenagers, Phineas and Gene, who grow up at Devon High School. This friendship is shown many times, from the beginning to the end. The first time that the friendship is shown is at the end of chapter three, when Gene describes Phineas as his best friend. Gene follows Phineas in everything: when they go to the beach, when they jump from the tree, when he participate to create the Super Suicide Society of the summer session and when they create “blitzball”. But sometimes Gene is also jealous about Phineas, an example would be when Phineas break the swimming record. At this point, he jumps from the tree too. The doctor then says to Gene that Phineas will not be able to play sports anymore. Here is where we see the strong friendship between them, because Gene becomes so upset that he tries to tell Phineas the truth, but he never tell him it because he is afraid that Phineas would not be his friend anymore. At one point in the story, Gene tries to tell Phineas the truth, but Phineas doesn’t believe him because he loves Gene and he doesn’t think that he would had done such an horrible thing. But a night, Brinker brings Phineas and Gene at the first building, and Leper Lepellier shows up. Leper was the one that assisted to the accident and the only one that knew the truth. So when he tells Phineas the truth, Phineas starts crying and run away, breaking his leg again. That’s another example of friendship, because Phinny doesn’t want to believe the truth since he loves
