Music Appreciation – Stylistic Comparison The Renaissance (1300-1600) and Baroque Periods (1600-1750)
The Renaissance period was a cultural movement that began from the late 13th century to the 17th century. According to the music and literature that came out of this period helped in developing the Baroque period which began at the start of the 17th century. These two historical periods had many similarities, but also had differences in which made the historical periods unique.

The early harmonic hymn by Gulianiame Dufay (1400-1474) in “Ave maris stella” changed the plain chants and challenged what many believed (Kermon and Tomlison 2015). This composition puts one in the mindset of being in a religious ceremony or what one would vision coming from a group of monks or priest during a deeply religious ceremony. Diversity of musical styles and genres flourished during the Renaissance period. According to (Green, 2017) some of the main composers during the Renaissance period were Thomas Tallis (1510-1585), Josquin Des Prez (1440-5121, Williams Byrd (1543-1623 and Giovanni Gabrielli (1553-1612).
As stated by Bent, “Renaissance notations is under-prescriptive by our standards and when translated into modern form it acquires a prescriptive weight that over specifies and distorts its original openness.” (Bent, 2017).
