Tim Burton is noted for many of his mysterious, suspenseful, and thrilling movies. His childhood has influenced the way he writes, screens and portrays movies to his public audience and fans. Four of these outstanding films are Edward Scissorhands, Frankenweenie, Corpse Bride, and Coraline. In these movies, and many of his others, Tim Burton uses a variety of cinematic techniques to portray and express feelings felt by the characters, set the moods, scenes, and the story. Tim Burton uses lighting, sound, and camera angles in order to create a coherent movie with amusing, suspenseful and tragic scenes.
Tim Burton uses the cinematic technique of lighting in order to flawlessly portray dark, mysterious and creepy scenes. In his movie, Edward Scissorhands, Burton effectively uses low key lighting in the scene where Peg enters Edward’s mansion and uses it in the opening credits to create tense and suspenseful scenes. Burton also uses high key lighting to his advantage when the neighbors and Peg threw a party for Edward. The scene was flooded with light to create a scene of happiness, amusement and surprises during the party. His use of lighting though, is taken to new levels in his other movie Frankenweenie. Although the whole movie is flooded with darkness, you can see when the scenes get darker or lighter. Burton uses low key lighting in the scene where Victor Frankenstein’s beloved dog Sparky is trapped inside the burning windmill while attempting to rescue another dog. The scene is flooded with darkness in order to create a frightening scene full of suspense. Burton also uses high key lighting during the scene where Sparky is revived by the New Holland’s citizens after the devastating fire that “killed” Sparky to create a scene ...

Tim Burton used lighting, sound, and camera angles & positions to develop a clear mood in every scene to further aid the audience on how to interpret every action and the movie as a whole. Burton uses these cinematic to his advantage which effectively communicates his tone to the audience. He used sound to appeal to our senses so we can hear suspense of happiness. He also used lighting to appeal to our sense of sight so we can be put on edge when it is low key, or keep us in a sense tranquility and happiness when it is high key. Finally, he used camera angles & positions to show what the character sees from their point of view. Tim Burton really is a dynamic director and producer who knows how to make varieties of audiences feel what he feels when creating his immaculate movies with incredible effects.
