The study has attempted to identify the factors behind the dropout of students after taking admission in public universities of Bangladesh. Student dropout is a major issue that emphasises the withdrawal from a university degree before completion. Vincent Tinto’s (1975) social-anthropological approach to student dropout showed the ‘Student Integration Model’ where student dropout has been classified in two types: voluntary withdrawal and involuntary dropout.
Dropout has strong socio-economic consequences on any student and also society at large. Larsen et al. (2013) divided the consequences into two parts – economic and academic. The study also considered financial problems and interest of going abroad. Another study (Rai, 2014) divided the reasons in three parts: individual factors (health issues & homesickness), Educational factors (learning difficulties & problematic courses, variation of Institution) and institutional factors (campus atmosphere, rules in hostel and low entertainment facilities).
Roger Bennett, (2003) developed a model to explain determinants of Undergraduate Student Dropout Rates in a University Business Studies Department and the academic performance, student motivation, satisfaction and commitment were identified. Pierrakeas et al. (2004) divided the causes in student related factors and institute related factors and showed relationships in between. Maliwan Sinnoi (2005) viewed the root of dropout is student’s personal irresponsibility and suggested preventive counselling.
A study of Rodríguez-Gómez et al (2012) showed that most students that dropout from public universities get readmitted in the first year and small percentage come back to the area of knowledge of their initial studies.
