Bora Oztekin Orange County Debate League: Student Board Member Application Essay In my years of experience with the Orange County Debate League, I have acquired priceless skills and experiences, whether it be debating or facilitating tournament operations. Back in the 7th grade, I expressed interest in joining the debate team at Fairmont North Tustin. Midway through the year, I volunteered to take pictures at the tournaments because I noticed that the league kept referencing to pictures and a photographer, but nobody actually took pictures. In my 8th grade year, I signed up to train to become a tournament administrator, but I quickly shifted gears and realized that the position was not for me when another opportunity came by, which was switching the tournament …show more content…
Although the task wasn’t even assigned to me, I felt that I could help. That offering of help led to the creation of the Circuit Administrator role, which I filled. I had a big job ahead of me, which included training and informing the administration about the program, teaching the coaches how to register their teams correctly, and ensuring that judges understood how to judge the rounds with the new system in place. I began trying to do all of this on my own, but I quickly realized that I needed support from a more senior member in the organization who had a wealth of experience running tournaments for the OCDL, so I figured that I could find that person and we could team up and roll out Tabroom together. Of course, things went by much more smoothly than they would have if I tried to do things on my own. It was then that I realized that the organization has a valuable team and it isn’t a weakness to ask for help, but rather a way to learn from others. Fast forwarding to the later tournaments, I watched the new tabulation system run itself, while being able to remove myself from the process completely. I considered this as a success because I had automated Tabroom enough that I worked myself
At a young age I knew as an African American woman through activism, educational autonomy, and community service, I can thrive through the wake of extreme poverty and turmoil faced by the people of my neighborhood of East New York. My interest in Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc., would be based solely on their ethical standards, history, and values they are founded upon. The ladies of this organization exude exemplary character who excel in sisterhood, respect, honesty, accountability, and integrity. Throughout my life I always encouraged myself to have these ideal characteristics without knowing that one day I would be pursuing membership in a prestigious organization, whom upheld the key principles “greater service, greater progress. The first
Earlier this year, I was selected as my local chapter’s delegate to the American Legion Jersey Boys State. This was a new experience for me as this was the first time I was away from home with no one I knew. The main focus of that weeklong seminar was elections and although I knew I was competing against some of the best students in the state, I wanted to see what I could do. So I ran to be my floor’s ward leader, and won. Then I ran for my city council member, and won. Then I ran to by my county Vice-chair, and won. Then I ran to be my county senator, and lost. This was by far the most disappointing moment of the week. I had worked hard to climb up the mock political ladder and even had started imagining making it to the top. However, the
The National Junior Honor Society is a very respected and prestigious organization that I would be glad to be a part of. The students involved exemplify scholarship, leadership, service, character, and knowledge. All of which are traits that are incredibly important in my own life. I feel that each student with the privilege to commit to this foundation should devote some time and effort to those qualities.
School has been hectic in a good way. Its senior year, where there is a lot of pressure on what is my next step. I know for a fact that I want to go to college. I have my list of where I want to go, some of the colleges are University of Connecticut, Vanderbilt University, Quinnipiac University, Mount St. Mary College, University of Massachusetts-Amherst, Baruch College, SUNY Binghamton, SUNY Brockport, SUNY Cortland, High Point University. I am thinking of majoring in International Business and minoring in linguistics, or double majoring in International Business and International relations and minoring in linguistics. Let me know your opinion on what you think of my majors and schools and let me know if you have any suggestions.
Sophomore year I heard about the STAR events for FCCLA, ever since then I’ve wanted to compete in them, particularly fashion design. The reason I have never competed in FCCLA is because sophomore year I didn’t feel that my skills were well developed yet. Then junior year I competed in tech-theatre for costume design and made it all the way to state. So now senior year has come and I feel that I’ve been preparing myself for two years for this moment. If I’m given the chance to compete I will be fully dedicated to my work and see to it that everything surpasses my standards. I know that I’m capable of doing this because of not only my mind set to it but also my past of competing in tech-theatre. I would stay after school for hours, spent almost every day at home working on it, sometimes all through the night because I didn’t want my train of thought or work focus to be lost. I made due dates for myself so that I was pacing my time correctly and not rushing to do last minute. Something else I did was when it came to the essay part of the competition I had my English teacher proof read it. I also had last year’s fashion teacher give me pointers on my sketching and swatches. The reason for doing that was to help make sure that it was as close to perfection as possible. Lastly I would best represent Stevens fashion club at the FCCLA competitive events by being true to myself and my work. Over the years I have grown as a person because of fashion club and it has taught me that being myself is key in not only school but in life.
This past fall I tried out for the varsity basketball team at my high school. I had played both on the freshman team and then last year on the junior varsity team. Playing on the varsity team is all I’ve wanted to do. I’d practiced all summer and in September and October to get ready for the try-outs at the beginning of November. Unfortunately I did not make the team. It was a huge blow for me because I had worked really hard and had expected to make it. Thankfully my moms and my friends were there to remind me that there were other paths to pursue my dreams. I could have easily been bitter and decided to stop caring, but they wouldn’t let me. I was humbled by this experience and decided to turn it into a positive. I’ve since decided to join the Wilson Live club at school. It’s a group that films and commentates sports events at school. This connects to a possible major that I’m interested in when I go to college--communications or sports
As a co-manager for both the Francis T. Maloney High School’s Girl’s Soccer Varsity and Junior Varsity teams, I was primarily responsible for recording player statistics throughout each game, including how many goals the players scored and how many the goalkeeper saved. Aside from this role, I also completed any other tasks asked of me by the coaches, including gathering the equipment after each practice and game and filling in for the coaches whenever necessary. For instance, there came a time during an away junior varsity game, a player experienced an asthma attack and the assistant coach needed to accompany her to the hospital so I remained behind with the team throughout the duration of the game. Upon completion of the game, with the assistance
I’ve learned how devastating the effects of certain decisions can be, along with how important it is to avoid negative influences in my life. I’ve become more devoted to school, and have found that it’s a useful distraction from those negative influences. I’ve decided to join the tennis team and maybe next year the baseball team, because athletic activities provide a good way for me to spend my
This may be a far cry to my circumstance, but personally this is the pain that I felt the day I got the call. In all high school and summer months I had great success on the golf course. I dominated golf tournaments through the years. When it came time to sit down and figure out where I wanted to play golf at,
Please excuse that this response is overdue. I have been trying to collect the needed transfer application material from the appropriate Bard High School Early College (BHSEC) administrators.
In conclusion, I have enjoyed learning more about a possible future opportunity in Coaching. I am so interested in this opportunity because of my love for the game and desire to help others become better. I realize that I won’t be able to reach each and every player. I am willing to do my best. I realize it isn’t likely that this would be my only job. I am willing to do what it takes to make this a part of my life career. . I would love the opportunity to be a head basketball coach at a High School or College level.
With the constant support from the Director of Athletic Development and Promotions, I was able to achieve a lot of goals I set for myself before joining the team. The most and confidence provided by my director was incredible and I am forever grateful for that. My director understanding my other campus commitments and allowing me to work from campus was a huge help, without this I would have not been able to achieve my goals. I will never forget the friendships I have made with the teams. I thoroughly enjoyed working for the two teams, they are not only hardworking but very respectful. I believe the future interns should also create this confidence level with their director that way they can discuss any issues easily. There should be more freedom given to the interns in terms of editing/making game day posters. The interns should use various photo editing software to create the home game posters as good advertisement posters attract a lot of peoples attention. Future interns should be more creative with their promotions and marketing strategies and do a lot of research before implementing any strategies. Lastly, with the new president coming to our university the future interns should come up with ideas to invite him to various athletics events in order to introduce him with our exceptional athletics program and get his support as he and his administration
...had very few content and it had to be put together in a short, unexpected, time span. So far it has been the same for the school year of 2016-2017 because no one shows up, though I and the group still thrive to doing the very best. Yearbook is something I truly enjoy. Although, debate was very intellectual it is an activity I did not enjoy much. I was in the first Denver Urban Debate League team my school ever had. We were all very lost with the structure, the content, and in general. The first ever debate tournament I competed in, a student’s partner did not show up. I had planned on competing by myself but I decided to pair with the student due to her bad luck. I had never practiced her so it caused a barrier. My determination allowed me to complete the tournament with the student and win third place despite of the roadblock. Debate taught way power and willpower.
I believe the purpose of student council is to provide opportunities to extraordinary students to develop leadership skills. The development of leadership skills is not limited to only school activities and service projects, but it also includes the small conversations and collaborations that go into creating a success that student council can achieve. A primary strength is my attention to detail. After years of losing points to silly mistakes such as forgetting the smallest of details, I learned to focus my attention and skills towards small details. This mindset I show towards my work also contributed to one of my other strengths, which is motivation. My attention to small details also gave me the momentum to discern myself from others. When
Besides academics, fine arts and sports in school, I have attained leading roles in different groups. This year, I am the Spirit Leader of Student Council encouraging monthly goals and themes and assisting in school events. From creating a student council with a group of peers three years ago we have had success in many events and have found new ways to spread spirit, gather important information and assist with financial groups. Recently, I stepped up to be the leader of the fundraising committee for our ...
