Pay for Play Why should division one athletes get compensation for their involvement in athletics? They receive scholarships right? Being a student-athlete is a full¬¬time commitment, and although athletics scholarships are a wonderful way to help these students earn a four year degree, they are also enabling colleges and universities to bring visibility and revenue to their respective schools. The division one athletes should get paid because some of them make millions of dollars a year for their college and receive nothing in return, they also risk serious physical injury, and they are not permitted by the NCAA to get a job. The NCAA places restrictions on the athletes’ ability to get a job while playing a sport. Playing a college sport is just like a full time job, despite the fact that there are no financial benefits. A colligate athlete is doing something everyday to benefit the team, whether it is practice, film, exercising, or lifting weights. With an intense to-do list such as this, they are left with no time to devote to meet NCAA’s academic standards. Because the NCAA places restrictions on the athletes’ ability to work, and they are not getting paid by the NCAA, the athletes must depend on their parents for financial support. Parents cannot always support their children financially, there comes a time when they need to be independent adults who can support themselves. During the course of trying to prove their independence, athletes may take out student loans, which put them in a financial dilemma. Paying athletes would make them far less dependent on their parents and take give them a little bit of familiarity and skill in terms managing money. After all, Art students can sell their paintings to the famous museums, science students can publish and sell their findings, and journalism majors can have their articles published in top name newspapers. It is the same situation when someone is able to produce a marketable talent for a school’s athletics department. It is unjust to the athletes to try and use their talents and not give them any sort of reward for them. It may be hard to bring ourselves to pay a teenager more than some mediocre professionals who had to work to gain any natural talent that they were not blessed with.
