Bullying is a reoccurring epidemic in schools throughout the country. On March 23, 2016 12-year-old Evan Ziemniak committed suicide due to bullying. His grandmother stated, “his suicide was his response to cope with the pain (Salinger).” There are various ways to bully someone such as physically, verbally, and cyber bullying. When observing bullying we can use various sociological approaches such as structural functionalist approach, social conflict approach, and symbolic interactionalist approach. Normally when we observe bullying we only see the victims and the victimizers. However, a structural functionalist will look at them interconnected to larger ones in society. Not only will structural functionalist observe bullies and their victims, but they are going to observe how bullying interlinks with the school systems, the moral values a society associates with bullying, and whether society frowns upon it or regard it. Instead of looking at how bullying affects a select group of people, structural functionalist will focus how it corresponds to society. When bullying is approached from a social conflict point of view statistical evidence such as surveys, interviews, and experiments are not only utilized to determine what groups of peopled are prone to bullying others but, they are also used to determine what group of people tend to be bullied. For example, 25% of African American students reported being bullied at school. “25% of African American students, 22% of Caucasian students, 17% of Hispanic students, and 9% of Asian students reported being bullied at school (National Center for Educational Statistics).” In other words, social conflict explains bullying in ways that is surrounded around the bullied or
