High Schools across America have been enforcing strict dress codes for ages, however, where is the line drawn between distraction of one’s classmates, and degradation of one’s outward expression of their inner self. Freedom of expression is a civil liberty outlined within the first amendment in our nation’s constitution of which public school systems are bound to by the fact that they are in fact a government regulated agency. Clothing is a form of expression and thus students should have the right to dress the way they want to, with this comes first impressions and the ability of a free citizen to be able to make a statement however it is they please. The length of a skirt, the width of a tank top strap are subjects too minuscule to be addressed. However, the promotion of illegal activity, drugs, violence, and nudity are things to be disciplined as administrators seem fit. Students should feel safe, and those things are drawing the line when it comes to the educational wellbeing of the high schools. Regulatory action is expected to be taken to an extent principals and superintendents feel necessary, and if a student feels their expressive rights have been infringed upon, that student should feel comfortable and safe appealing the decision of their authority figure in a mature and appropriate manner. In conclusion, dress code will eventually be less enforced as generations to come bring this issue to more attention. As it is an important element of first impressions, freedom of expression, and a new societal movement; the harsh and unnecessary punishment placed upon students is something to be repealed. Although disciplinary actions are to be taken if the clothing of another student is in direct violation with another’s rights and educational process.
