Analysis of Advanced Placement Essay Strengths and Weaknesses The rhetorical strategies prompt, which involves analyzing a passage and constructing an essay on the strategies the author utilizes to convey an idea, is the prompt that the class has been practicing throughout the year. There are many strong components in my rhetorical strategies essays. I open the essay with a clear, definitive thesis, setting the tone for the entire paper. The analysis consistently follows the pattern of addressing the strategy’s function in the sentence, and its function in the author’s thesis. I also close each paragraph with a strong concluding sentence. However, there are parts of my essay that need additional work. I need to improve my topic sentences by broadening them, ensuring that they are informative and clear. The analysis of each strategy needs to be equal and strong throughout the entire essay. Similar to the rhetorical strategies essay, there are several strong components in my synthesis essays. I write strong introductions, connecting the pre-thesis to the objective of the documents. Furthermore, my topic sentences are clear, and each sentence takes a side to introduce an example. Each paragraph contains a lengthy analysis of the example, which allows one to understand the ways each example connects to the thesis. Although my syntheses are usually strong, there are also parts that I can improve. I must remember to use the author’s name if I am frontloading a citation. In addition, I need to shorten my quotes to save time, time which could be used to improve my analyses or add to my conclusion. Lastly, I need to divide between syllables if I need to continue onto the next line with one word. For Wednesday, I will use shorter quotes in my examples, and carefully plan each example in the allotted time for reading the
Jonathan Kozol revealed the early period’s situation of education in American schools in his article Savage Inequalities. It seems like during that period, the inequality existed everywhere and no one had the ability to change it; however, Kozol tried his best to turn around this situation and keep track of all he saw. In the article, he used rhetorical strategies effectively to describe what he saw in that situation, such as pathos, logos and ethos.
Throughout his preface of the book titled Why We Can’t Wait, which entails the unfair social conditions of faultless African Americans, Martin Luther King employs a sympathetic allegory, knowledge of the kids, and a change in tone to prevail the imposed injustice that is deeply rooted in the society—one founded on an “all men are created equal” basis—and to evoke America to take action.
In the book Into the Wild, Jon Krakauer wrote about Christopher McCandless, a nature lover in search for independence, in a mysterious and hopeful experience. Even though Krakauer tells us McCandless was going to die from the beginning, he still gave him a chance for survival. As a reader I wanted McCandless to survive. In Into the Wild, Krakauer gave McCandless a unique perspective. He was a smart and unique person that wanted to be completely free from society. Krakauer included comments from people that said McCandless was crazy, and his death was his own mistake. However, Krakauer is able to make him seem like a brave person. The connections between other hikers and himself helped in the explanation of McCandless’s rational actions. Krakauer is able to make McCandless look like a normal person, but unique from this generation. In order for Krakauer to make Christopher McCandless not look like a crazy person, but a special person, I will analyze the persuading style that Krakauer used in Into the Wild that made us believe McCandless was a regular young adult.
Authors use rhetorical strategies to express themes in their writing. Different rhetorical strategies help convey different themes with varying degrees of effectiveness. One way to measure the effectiveness is to rhetorical analyze two pieces of writing to each other and see which is best.

Pollan’s article provides a solid base to the conversation, defining what to do in order to eat healthy. Holding this concept of eating healthy, Joe Pinsker in “Why So Many Rich Kids Come to Enjoy the Taste of Healthier Foods” enters into the conversation and questions the connection of difference in families’ income and how healthy children eat (129-132). He argues that how much families earn largely affect how healthy children eat — income is one of the most important factors preventing people from eating healthy (129-132). In his article, Pinsker utilizes a study done by Caitlin Daniel to illustrate that level of income does affect children’s diet (130). he evaluation of the overall rhetorical effectiveness for intended audience was a failure starting with the ethos of having no much credibility for the author, pathos, no real connection to emotion to aid the doctor, and not being able to see the real problem, and with the lack of logos to explain how to be able to obtain aid and help the student improve. As a result, in the editorial the authors had no success in persuading all the audience. For that reason, college students should be able to see the correct way to write their essay and the effective method for them to pass class with excellent essays.
A synthesis essay should be organized so that others can understand the sources and evaluate your comprehension of them and their presentation of specific data, themes, etc.

The rhetorical analysis played a role in this, because I was required to use the various rhetorical appeals to compose a strong argument. Using the appeals definitely helped in trying to persuade the reader to acknowledge the opposing view.
Previous to this course, I had never been exposed to rhetoric, nor did I understand rhetoric and its influence the first time it was introduced to me. In addition to having limited exposure to rhetoric, this was my first real writing assignment for an AP course. The process I used to complete this essay is far different from the process I’ve developed throughout this school year. I allowed my anxiety to override my brain, resulting in me stressing myself throughout the whole writing process. Rather than accepting that I am good enough for an AP course, I doubted my writing skills and drove myself crazy by second-guessing every word and phrase I typed. I relentlessly researched rhetoric, vocabulary, and other writing knowledge, which would be beneficial for the future, but I let all of the writing skills I had not yet acquired prevent me from using the skills I did have to write a great essay. Now, I type everything I have to say about the essay topic and then review my work only fixing what needs to be fixed. At this point in time I had difficulty quoting text; I had to learn how to stop drop quoting and when to use brackets, commas, and ellipses. Looking back on this essay, I wish I had taken notes on the text, as it would have made analyzing structure far easier. I also wish I had asked for help when I felt unsure about rhetoric rather than trying to find answers

The easiest part of this component was actually inserting it in my essay after I understood the purpose for it, because at the beginning I was confused on the whole thesis concept. The thesis was the most challenging because I kept asking myself "Can I really argue this for five to six pages?" and also "Is this even considered a thesis statement?" I noticed that I can speak and write more effectively when I'm thinking critically and intellectually. My sentence structure has always been strong and I feel it has grown because of the practice we have had in class with finding thesis statements in our readings. My overall issue with this component of the writing process is using a justifiable argument and remembering to support my argument with claims and trying not to put unnecessary points in my paper while maintaining my ethos.
The tools I have accumulated in English 43 have set me up for success in future English classes. My strongest growth is prevalent in my ability to formulate a strong thesis statement. As displayed in the following thesis statement, I wrote, “Do not let your past memories fool you! When you find yourself in this battle of the living dead simply remember to stay one step ahead, arm yourself accordingly, and trust no one during your battle to survive the enduring wrath of the zombie threat.” I was able to hit on all the critical criteria to require in a thesis statement. Here, not only did I give the reader a general preview to the topic of the piece, but also I listed my three main points that will be covered. This is important because the thesis statement paints a picture to what you are going to cover in your writing. Without a strong thesis statement, your reader is left without a clear preview to what your position or point is within your writing. English 43 has also refined my ability to write a strong topic sentence.
