Sociological Approach By utilizing the sociological critical analysis, how does each story reveal the roles of women in the early twentieth century? The best way to approach a critique to Trifles and The Story of an Hour is by using the sociological approach. The sociological approach is about the relationship of the individual in society and the events in society, and social constructs. Both stories reveal the roles of women but in different ways. The authors of Trifles and The Story of an Hour use their stories to reveal how the roles of women in society, how women felt emotionally, and how women want independence in society. The play Trifles is written by Susan Glaspell. Susan Glaspell, born July 1, 1876, in Davenport Iowa; had a four-year education at Drake University and had a job as a reporter in Des Moines, Iowa. Her husband, George Cram Cook, was a theater director; together they started the Provincetown Players. Her work consisted of feminist dramas; most of her work dealt with the roles women played, or were forced to play, in a patriarchal society. She was the third of five children, her two sisters died during infancy, and her half-brothers died in their early twenties. Kate was five when her father, thus having a string relationship with her mother. She later had six kids with Oscar Chopin; he died leaving Kate to raise the children by herself. Her work, more specifically her book titled The Awakening, spoke true about women, but these truths challenged the image of women in her time.
