Storm of Steel is a personal account of Ernst Jünger’s experiences during the First World War. In his account of the war, he depicted the war as both valiant and terrible. A patriot to the German cause, Jünger thought that the war was a call of duty to all German men and he was more than happy to join the cause. Storm of Steel is written in a unique style told from the perspective of a soldier in the trenches. He uses memories and diary entries to add to the material in the book. It is an excellent personal account of the experiences of the German soldier in many of the major events of the war including the battles of the Somme, Arras, Ypres, Cambrai, and the German Spring offensive in 1918.
To give a brief background of Jünger, before the war Jünger who had a great sense of adventure and joined the French Foreign Legion in Algeria . Not long after, he joined the German army on August 1st 1914 on the first day of the war. He participated in many key battles throughout the war and was wounded several times throughout the course of the book.
One of the most important aspects of Storm of Steel is the amount of detail that Jünger puts into the book. Storm of Steel is essentially just a descriptive account of the war without any insight or care about rationalizing broader concepts of the war. This book adds to our historical knowledge because it gives a great firsthand account of the war from a man who served in the trenches. Not only that, but Jünger participated in many major battles throughout the war. Due to this, Jünger’s experiences give an unprecedented look into the life of the average soldier. This perspective also shows how the soldiers were effected by and perceived the changes and events that occurred we have discussed in class on a broader front. However, Jünger rarely expresses his opinions of the war as a whole or dwells on broader concepts such as the justification of the war. Overall Jünger’s assessment of the war is very detailed and interesting, but it lacks in explanation.
