Cerci: a pair of small appendages at the end of an insects abdomen or other arthropods

An defensive and behaviour adaptation of not many mayfly nymphs is doing their "scorpion stance" when threatened. Although mayflies may not have any defences except camouflaging and hiding from their predators, they are known for mimicking an insect that does have defences (scorpion). This scorpion stance has more of an effect on stonefly nymphs as on other predators for most stoneflies immediately give up the attempt and avoid the mayfly when they see this frightening
