Stigma of Mental Illness Nearly 50% of people experience some sort of mental illness at some point in their lives. At some point in everyone’s life they will have suffered from sort of mental illness from depression to anything that affects a person’s mood. Even with the tremendous advances in the understanding and treatment of mental illnesses, the stigma surrounding mental illness still persists. For example, people with mental illness may be viewed as lazy or irresponsible, insurance companies are making it harder for the mentally ill to have insurance, and it is hard for the mentally ill to maintain a job. Most people in society view those with a mental illness as lazy or irresponsible because they do not understand the mental illness. For example, most people do not understand depression and how people can get so low, stay in bed, cry all the time or not take care of themselves. Since we do not understand this disorder we jump to calling the person lazy for sleeping all day or irresponsible for not taking care of themselves or their families, yet the illness prevents them from doing these things. You may have a person who suffers from bipolar disorder and you cannot understand why they are so happy and spending their money, then in a month they are so down and no longer want to live. Insurance companies are beginning to deny those with mental illness pay for medical leave, even though they are paying for the coverage. Insurance companies are making it harder for mentally ill to get the treatment that they need due to so many stipulations in order to receive care. Many people with mental illness are forgoing treatment because it takes so much to receive their care, which makes their illness worsen.
