We all know that physical enhancement drugs are not good for your health, and they boost your muscle mass greatly if used regularly. Your muscles are not the only thing that PED’s boost. They also greatly enhance your physical ability. The use of steroids should be prohibited in all sports. Steroids have been used and abused by many great athletes throughout the years. Whether they were used for “healing” or just for the joy of being bigger than the next guy, we will never know. What we do know is the damage that steroids can do to the human body. When you take steroids you may think that you’re just getting stronger or your body is healing, actually your body is just being broken down over time. The short term effects can occur within one use of steroids. People who use and abuse anabolic steroids do so for the effects related to improved physical performance and muscle growth. However, with these intended improvements in strength and performance can come many unwanted short-term effects, which include acne, mood swings, fatigue, restlessness or agitation, decreased appetite, trouble sleeping, decreased sperm count, and impotence (medshadow.org). These are just some of the effects of steroids. Since anabolic steroids are synthetic forms of testosterone, they will influence many of the characteristics of gender in the person abusing the substance. In those taking doses up to 100 times the medically-appropriate levels, many side effects caused by steroids will occur (drugabuse.com). Some side effects are shrinking of the testicles, excessive hair growth in women, deepening of the voice in women, growth of breast tissue in men, fertility issues, heart problems, elevated blood pressure, rapid mood swings, mania, stroke, and menstrual irregularities for women
