Feminism is the theory that both genders should be politically, economically, and socially equal to one another. Over the course of a couple decades the term Feminism has consequently become the new “f-word” (Greenhaven Press 1). Countless are offended by the word and will not associate with it, even if he or she is in support of gender equality. This is due to the overwhelming amount of stereotypes surrounding feminism. Feminists are often associated as man-hating lesbians with a desire to conquer and annihilate the male sex, as well as to destroy traditional family values. Stereotypes resembling these have led to the distaste towards feminism. Because of this, the struggle for gender equality is becoming more strenuous to fight and near …show more content…
Feminism does not seek to lessen femininity, but rather to strengthen what being a woman is truly about. To feminists, this includes being as free and independent as one desires. Feminism does not want to take away the role women play in society; rather it wants people to be able to choose their own path based on their strengths and weaknesses, not by the anatomical structure of their reproductive organs. In an article called “What it would be like if Women Won”, author Gloria Steinem says “In this country, come Utopia, men and women won't reverse roles; they will be free to choose according to individual talents and preferences” (Steinem 2). Furthermore, feminism is used to empower women. It is to make a woman feel significant and equal in every social, political, and economic situation she is faced …show more content…
Sometimes we get so caught up in the aggressive and extreme feminists that we cannot see through to the people who actually care about men too, not just the empowerment of women. That is why this was started. It was not a bunch of women who hated men and wanted to get above them. Rather, feminism began as the desire to obtain the shear respect that men obtain and earn that women also feel they deserve, if they work for it. Subsequently, feminists work fiercely because they will not get anything if they sit around and do nothing about the situation they are presented with. That is why a number of feminists are so pushy. It is not because feminists want to shove their beliefs down someone’s throat, rather feminists want to achieve something. Though numerous amounts of people believe this to be true, feminism is not outdated. It is not useless. All of this energy that is put out needs to achieve something. It is right in front of us, it just needs to be steered in the right direction. Feminism is a movement worth joining because it protects women, advocates complete equality of the sexes, and allows women to embrace being women. The Sydney Morning Herald says “feminism wants one simple and extremely un-threatening thing. Equality” (Sydney Morning Herald 2). There is so much work to be done to create a better world. Imagine a world where men and
“Feminism”, as defined today, is “1: the theory of the political, economic, and social equality of the sexes,” and “2: organized activity on behalf of women’s rights and interests.”2 Many critics claim that feminism has been active longer than the word itself has existed.3 The word, “feminist” was not in true use until the late 1800s and early 1900s, but activism for women’s rights was alive and well a...
Feminism, in its simplest definition, is the belief that men and women should have equal rights and opportunities. (Webster) Feminists fight for equality for women to men socially, politically, and economically. At the peak of feminist discourse is equality for men and women in education and in employment. However, feminism also focuses on more than issues regarding the rights of women in relation to men. Issues of gender equality and women’s right to control their sexuality are also at the core of feminist theory. A key argument made by many feminists is how women have very little control over their sexuality, mainly being defined and controlled by men. T...
Patriarchy is a system of society or government in which men hold the power and women are largely excluded from it. It is called “the dominant ideology of patriarchy.” A system where men continually play the dominant or masculine role. Past generations argued that people who speak against feminism are scared of change. They believed one gender should have control over the other and were scared that everyone should be treated the same. The idea that one gender is inferior to another in any aspects is absurd and damaging. Each human being has its own special talents and skills that they can choose to help society, and if we start to embrace those abilities without prejudice and without controlling people with stereotypical gender roles, then
The most related terms when women’s right is brought up are feminism and feminist. A feminist, by definition, is someone the fights for feminism. The definition of feminism, one the other hand, is very complex. Throughout history, the word has continuously had bad images and connotations thrown its wa...
You are at an interview, the interviewer says that you are not qualified for the job because of your gender. What would you say? Sexism has caused stereotypes, and harassment in the workforce, and professional sports, therefore people should know more about sexism. Media is a powerful tool of communication, it produces both negative and positive impacts on society.
True feminism sought for women to have freedom and rights, such as the right to vote, the right to gain an education, and the right to equal wages. In most aspects, we have been given these rights, but radical feminists are not content. There has been a jump from “We are equal to men,” to “women are superior.” Women have been fighting stereotypes for ages, proclaiming how horrid they are, yet quickly turn around and stereotype men and see no issue with this hypocrisy. The way for women to reach the equality they seek is to bring others up as well as themselves, not to tear them down. When feminists realize and act upon this, they will begin to see the results they have been hoping
Feminism is the movement towards women’s equality. It fights for equal rights in the social, political, cultural and economical aspects for women. Feminism also fights for equal opportunity for women in employment and education. A feminist is someone who advocates their support for women’s rights but is not restricted to only women; anyone who supports women’s rights and equality are feminists, including men. Feminism is not only about the females, it fights for gender equality for all. Feminist movements, or Women’s movements, campaign for reforms in household issues with domestic violence, political issues with equal pay, employment and maternity leave, and reproduction rights. All feminism movements fight for equal rights, but it cannot be conquered or be made known all at once. First wave feminism was mostly about women’s suffrage and political equality in general. Second wave feminism went more in depth about the social and cultural inequalities.
In modern times a group of people with the same belief system banded together to form a group called “feminist”. Broadly, feminism can be described as a group “based on the theoretical argument that in order to address structural inequalities” (Goldin Bowditch 3) society must treat women as equals opposed to counter parts. This creates a
Despite barricades, feminism managed to thrives and expand. There no longer exist a hegemonic definition or single objective of feminism. It now encompasses the anti-discrimination of LGBTQ community, freedom to express self-identities that were once deviant, and aspirations for better communities for all. Today, feminism has become more than movements, it is a mentality, belief, and mainstay for many movements to be fostered. The waves that have carried feminist far beyond its original and moderate intent in pursuing equality for women has redefined and consequently changed laws, transformed views, and make the world a better
Feminism has nothing to do with belittling men, feminism does not reinforce sexism for either gender. Feminism works towards equality, not female superiority. In the speech titled “ He for She” by Emma Watson, she introduces today 's issues on female equality. Feminism does not only empower women. As human beings we should all seek to empower one another and work towards change as a single community rather than a divided gender population. Both men and women can become advocates to change the systemic inequalities that women face such as through rape culture.
The only requirement necessary in order to be a feminist is to truly believe in equality and women's rights, and to fight for it, push for it, do your best to achieve it. In a poll conducted by the Washington Post, only 33% of men view themselves as feminists. In an article from “The Lala” talks about feminism and says, “The “F-word” I’m referring to here is feminism. Somehow the term, which fights for social, political and economic equality of the genders, has become taboo.
Feminism is the result of the woman’s liberation movement, which began in the 18th century and gained momentum in the late 19th century after it was found that males were completely dominating every area of life. The word feminism at any point in time, has had many negative connotations to it as well as a good majority of the
Men view the word feminist as a sexist term in and of itself, because it has “fem” in it, meaning woman. Although feminism strives towards equality at ALL costs,, feminism and equalism are NOT the same. Changing feminism to equalism would imply that men would have to take a step down to be equal to the female gender, further arguing that women are weak and have to have men do everything for us. Feminism proves that we can take that step UP to be equal to men and not have to settle to meet somewhere in the middle. Feminism proves that we are strong, abled beings that can do anything a man can. Feminism is basically women bringing out the best in all of us... But why stop there? Men can, too! Feminism is NOT exclusive to women, as most might think. Male celebrities, such as actor Matt McGorry from Orange is the New Black, openly identifies as an “Intersectional Feminist” in his Twitter
Even though society has distorted the ideals feminism was founded upon, some of the remaining true roots still hold true. While women are gaining equal opportunities in society, they need to not diminish the importance of working together with men to form a functional society. The widespread idea of quotas needs to be analyzed. People should be accepted into college or hired for a job because they are the most qualified, not because of their sex. Society has demented feminism as a harmful dogma because it has been an excuse, almost a cop-out by women who do not want to work for their acceptance. Both men and women need to realize the necessity that exists for each other to make society work.
Feminism is a source of empowerment for women. True feminism supports both men and women, and understands that both genders have social issues that must be fixed. Feminists can be from anywhere, or be anyone despite gender. Feminism has been a movement for a long time, first becoming prominent during the fight for women’s suffrage and changing since then in the problems it faces. Feminism is important because it fights for social, political, and economic equality by giving strength to women and encouraging independence and acceptance. It is also important to be aware that true feminists do not hate men, typical feminine lifestyles, or people who want to follow traditional family structures. Everyone needs to know what feminism really means. So much hate is thrown at feminists because of misconceptions about what true feminism is working towards. Once society understands what feminism is truly about, only then can it work at it’s best to fight for equality for
