Unless you have been living under a rock your whole life you should be aware of the stereotypes that exist in America. These stereotypes are big amongst the African American community. These stereotypes have given a negative depiction of African Americans for years. From things, such as sports, government assistance and media depiction just to name a few. today I will discuss the racial divide and media of African Americans.

the war of light skin vs. dark skin has existed for years which is highly noticed by other races. Black men don’t find women of darker skin tones attractive this trend is most common among rappers and other public figures. when the media especially news outlets cover stories it never fails they always make the African American individual that was killed out to be a hoodlum. Even if they have come from a stable background and not the hood Blacks are always viewed as criminals or suspicious looking. were lumped in to the same categories of gang bangers, thugs and criminals. regardless of the credentials you have it is believed we all come from poverty stricken areas or the hood as others would say. For example, Travon martin a young man with a high 3.7 grade point average and was minding his business when he was killed, but because he was black the media tried to bring up thing to incriminate him. They presented to fact that martin had THC in his blood which is a chemical found in marijuana. According to a 2014 report by the Center for the Study of Women in Television, Film & New Media, found that females comprised only 30% of all speaking characters among the top grossing films of 2013. Furthermore, the news media does an equally poor job in the ways that African-American’s are presented; according to the same study while 27% of Americans were considered “poor” in 1996 the images of America’s “poor” being presented by news media was heavily Black (63%). (Busselle & Crandall, 2002) Today, this can be seen in the way that African-American victims of police brutality are depicted in the media.
