The Others (2001) by Alejandro Amenábar is a horror film based around a family living on the small island of Jersey after World War II. Grace and her two children, who she claims are sensitive to light and must have the blinds always covered, live in an old house and are assisted by three new servants. Grace becomes very upset when she finds out that a family, perceived as spirits, has invaded the house because she was able to “avoid a single Nazi stepping foot in this house” during the occupation of Jersey during the war. Later, Grace discovers that the servants she hired died of tuberculosis and are haunting the house in a zombie-like way while the family that is perceived as spirits are actually living. One reason for this mistrust of Muslims is that terrorists are able to hide in plain sight, much like the invisible owner’s family in the film, because people are unable to sense the true intentions of someone. To combat this, the American public developed a stereotype against people who wore Muslim cultural clothing such a hijab. Much like Grace seeking to gain control of her house by locking every door behind her, Americans felt the need to “reinstall patriarchal order against the natural” (Pizzato 221) by profiling and corralling Muslims away from the general …show more content…

For a majority of the film you are lead to believe that Grace and her children are the victims while in reality they are the true antagonists that haunt the house. After the 9/11 attacks in 2001, there was a fear of the unknown which caused Americans to prejudge and separate themselves from Muslims based upon fear and stereotypes much like how Grace seeks to protect herself from the intruders by locking door and shutting curtains. Grace’s logical left brain fought battle with the more accepting right side when the servants, who in the end were also “The Others” like the invisible family, when she fired a shotgun, with no effect at the people who were of no harm to her. This movie teaches us a powerful lesson in judgement has helped me learn to not fear The Others like Muslims that live among us
