The movie Avatar, written and directed by James Cameron, is based off many influence from his life. These range from the science fiction books he read as a kid to obscure dreams told to him by his mother. But even though the movies character were not made to fit the religious stereotypes that accompanied the culture at the time of the making of this movie the unconscious bias we all have about foreign culture clearly impacted the making of the movie. Whether it be the primal or indigenous beliefs of the na’vi or the the violent, mechanical, and greedy nature of the mining company a lot of the element of the movie reflect element of religious stereotypes of the time. Avatar the motion picture throws you into a rich world, with diverse characters who clash over cultural and socio-economic issues. At the heart of the story is a former Marine named Jake Sully, who falls in love while on an alien planet with a woman from a race of people called the Na’vi. The character whom he falls in love with is an alien for which he sacrifices his whole way of life to be with. By way of his experiences with the Na’vi, he begins to adopt a new worldview, which can only be described as Pantheism.
“Bringing Down the House” featuring Steve Martin and Queen Latifah is a clever comedy that creatively showcases the sociolinguistic phenomena covered in this course. The film is about a tax attorney named Peter, played by Martin, who stumbles into an online lawyer chat room and meets Charlene, played by Latifah. The two chat frequently, mostly about court cases, and eventually decide to meet in person. When the day finally comes, Peter is greeted at the door with who he thought would be a middle-aged Caucasian woman, but happened to be Charlene, a black woman who just escaped from prison. Thinking this was a mistake, Peter tries to kick out Charlene but is later convinced she is the one who he was speaking with in the chat room. Charlene was able to successfully impersonate a lawyer through speech, and along with a deceiving picture, able to convince Peter she was a petite blonde. During these chats, the two talked about court cases that happened to relate to Charlene’s predicament with the law. In attempt to clear her name from a crime she did not commit, Charlene researched the judicial system and similar court cases to hers while in prison. Now that she is out, she seeks personal assistance from Peter who has already through the internet, given her support. All throughout the movie the characters contrast in viewpoints, culture, and most importantly for our studies, language. Charlene and Peter represent different language backgrounds which we can analyze as the root of their character development and actions throughout the film.
(4) Conventional is easy. Whenever an idea is generally perceived by society as standard or traditional it becomes very easy to display to the public without the raise of an eyebrow. This is the basis on which stereotypes appear in films. You’d think in the 21st century where what once were radical notions like same sex marriage and recreational drug use are being legalized that something uncalled for like the constant portrayal of character stereotyping would come to an end. Alas, stereotypical characters continue to emerge in film and unfortunately have become a staple of Hollywood because they’re simple and straightforward, requiring little effort on the part of the writers or thinking from the audience.
Chris Mccandless was seen as a demented person as he left his comfortable and promising life for a life of wandering in the wood however this was far from the truth. Jon Krakauer in his Biography “Into the Wild” an emotional piece which reports on the travels and moral dilemmas of Chris Mccandless a charismatic young man in search of the true freedoms of life free from any moral authority.
This crime has been an important piece of criminal history for the past 70 years. This is an example of an extreme case being published due to the fact that more extreme cases make more interesting articles. This was only one of 636 murders in New York City that year. This was also a case that also had implications of how we view human nature. Though there are several things that this case has influenced over the past several years, there were many misrepresentations in the article. Though this case has often been misinterpreted, some of the most important things to take note of are the way people viewed the case vs. how it took place, the inaccuracies found in the article, and the tangible consequences of the murder.
Have you ever sat down and questioned whether if stereotyping is really an issue? Many of us don’t really even know what stereotyping really is or what it does to our society. According to the Dictionary stereotyping is a form of pre-judgment. Which is as prevalent in today’s society as it was thousands of years ago. Throughout generations its purpose has stayed the same. Stereotypes are a huge issue in today’s society, as it will be for future ones. It labels a person on how they should act or live according to their sex, race, personality, and other fact .Not only do they affect society but also the person who is being stereotyped against. It does this by depriving one’s true ability for change and freedom of expression. They have created a distortion of how everything and every individual should be. Stereotyping is bad for society because it leads to discrimination, which harms individuals, and makes a negative future for future generations.

I made a google form to find out what people think more than 80 percent of kids taking my survey are 15 year old the other 20 percent was a 14 year old. Mostly 60 percent are female the other 40 percent are males.
In the modern era, stereotypes seem to be the ways people justify and simplify the society. Actually, “[s]tereotypes are one way in which we ‘define’ the world in order to see it” (Heilbroner 373). People often prejudge people or objects with grouping them into the categories or styles they know, and then treat the types with their experiences or just follow what other people usually do, without truly understand what and why. Thus, all that caused miscommunication, argument or losing opportunities to broaden the life experience. Stereotypes are usually formed based on an individual’s appearance, race, and gender that would put labels on people.
Whether it is Marlon Brando playing a Japanese translator in 1956 or Sigourney Weaver as an Egyptian pharaoh’s mother in 2014, white people have been taking the roles of non-white characters for almost one hundred years. No matter how progressive we may think we are as a society, many movies are made each year in which non-white characters are played by white actors. Either the original race of that character is erased or the actor is made to look the race of that character. These poor substitutions have become known in the industry and among moviegoers as whitewashing.
Ok, not going to lie this was definitely not one of my favorite things to listen to, although it was quite catchy (yes, it’s still stuck in my head). Beyond that, there were stereotypes abound in this parody. One of the first I noticed was the description of the homecoming queen “in pink chiffon” looking straight out of Disneyland. This leads to a stereotypical “pretty girls must be perfect” image, the perfect look, clothes, and behavior (well except she decided to shoot up the parade instead of conforming to the stereotype). Then there were the cheerleaders named Buffy and Mitzi, which are typical “bimbo, airheaded,” cheerleader names. Stereotype, when used as a transitive verb, by definition means “to believe unfairly that all people or things with a particular characteristic are the same.” In other cases, when it is used as a noun, it is defined as “an often untrue belief that many people have about all people or things with a particular characteristic. Our society defines stereotype as a type of prejudgment one assumes about a person wherein they categorized him/her into a group where other people possess a certain characteristic or trait that he/she shares as well. In “Avatar”, the concept of cultural relativism is explored in numerous ways. The main character, Jake Sully, is a prime example of cultural relativism. As Jake submerges himself among the Na’vi and their culture, he begins to realize the culture, viewing it from the Na’vi perspective. After falling in love with a native, Neytiri, Jake realizes the innocence of the Na’vi and how they are simply trying to protect their homeland. He begins to understand the value in scared places to the Na’vi, most notably the Tree of Souls. The many archetype that are in the movie Avatar propel the plot, allowing the hero to complete his hero’s journey, which he otherwise could not have done, and would then be unsuccessful at it. Grace and Neytiri, the two mentors, help Jake overcome hardships, moving him along his journey and propelling the plot of Avatar forward. The two evil figures of Colonel Miles and Park evolve the plot while trying to take the precious ore from the Na’vis. The woodsprites propel the story and the Na’vis’ ations, creating action.
