Every person that you have walked by in your lifetime has their own story. Each time you walk by a person, you put a little trust in them without even realizing it. In our day to day lives, we do not have the time to ask every person we see for their history or their memoir, so we trust them to be good people as we quickly walk by without ever saying a word or dropping a glance. It is important not to make judgements about others without taking into consideration their past experiences. That being said, you shouldn’t assume you what that possible experience could be without properly getting to know someone. That can lead you down a dangerous road of stereotypes and misconceptions. It is how humans function and have functioned for thousands of years. A past experience of someone determines what lengths they are capable go to accomplish something or what lines they were once willing to cross. In order to maintain a sense of safety and confidence in our surroundings, we prefer to know the people around us. Each person we come across in our lives should be dealt with differently because no single person has lived the life of another. Human beings are capable of great and terrible actions. The greatest thing we are capable of is adapting to our situations. After making mistakes, we can quickly learn from them. A better way to describe this concept is with a quote that YJ Arciaga mentioned in his blog post that said, “[A] friend is someone that possesses a desire of yours.” Friends are presumed to be people that we trust with our lives and secrets, preferably not people we question or doubt. Nevertheless, there is a high chance that you will not be aware of the life story of everyone around you, so instead you assume that your best option is to judge them based on the information that you do have about them in their present day to day life. The best way to interact with someone you are hesitant to speak with is to get to know them. If you have questions about someone around you, find a subtle and polite way to get answers to ease your nerves instead of creating your own conclusion as to why this person is the way that they are. It’s important to remember that the person that they are today is just as important to get to know as is the person they were yesterday. Whether or not you agree with who they are and what they might have done, it is necessary that you respect them. At the very least, you must learn to coexist with them in cases of walking by them with a neutral expression instead of a nasty look to get your mail or inviting them to the neighborhood barbecue because it is the nice thing to
