Introduction
I play volleyball as an outside hitter for Berea College. Therefore, the question I want this statistical research paper to answer pertains to volleyball. Specifically, I want to know if there is a relationship between the height of a volleyball player and the number of blocks she has in a set. A block constitutes the deflection of a ball into the opponent’s court, directly resulting in a point. I am interested in the answer to this question for a couple of reasons. First, it directly relates to one of my passions and is applicable to my current stage of life. Also, I believe the answer to this question will help me become a better volleyball player, which is an important goal in my life right now. I decided to sample from the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) for two basic reasons: (1) it is the conference Berea College is trying to become a member of, so it would help me analyze potential, future competition; (2) the HCAC has 10 teams, which made sampling easy. To collect the data, I randomly selected the statistics for three OH from each of the 10 member’s athletic page1. I gathered two types of data on each player: height and blocks per set. The sample size for my data is 30, the most occurring height is 70,” and the average height for an OH is 69.5.” This average height makes sense because the tallest OH is 72” tall and the shortest is 66.” The minimum blocks/set is 0 and the maximum is 1.05, while the average blocks/set is 0.3.
