I was raised by a mother who dropped out of college after her first semester and a grandmother who only had a third grade education. Both women taught me how important education was and to continue learning as much as I can. Despite raising seven children alone, my grandmother eventually earned her GED and took several college courses to show her children how important education was. My mother returned to college 20 years after dropping out and earned her a Master’s Degree in Human Services. The determination I saw in them is the reason I decided to continue my education and pursue graduate studies. After six years of work experience in the information technology industry, I have finally decided which field I would like to focus on. I’ve always had an interest in programming ever since taking a technology course in high school. I took what I learned in the course and applied it to the earlier social media sites, such as Blackplanet.com and Myspace.com. I realized that this was becoming a hobby as my friends would ask that I create the layouts for their personal pages using HTML. Before focusing on information technology, I majored in Athletic Training. After failing two important courses for the major, I gave up and decided to study Art. During my senior year, I realized that I did not want to pursue a career in art, as it was more of a hobby. Instead of changing my major again, I decided to graduate on time and gain experience in the work force. After working for a few months, I enrolled in Towson University’s graduate program, majoring in Computer Science. I believe it was the lack of in-depth knowledge of computer systems at the time, which caused for me to not want to continue with the program. A year later, I looked into pu... ... middle of paper ... ...y skills are concentrated in Software Design and programming, I do not want to limit myself to developing programs and applications. My goal is to not only develop applications, but also gain experience in project management. This prepares me for the challenges I may face as a development manager. Not only will I develop these skills professionally, I’ll also work on projects outside of work. I would like to help develop applications that will be utilized in everyday life, such as computer software and mobile applications. The keys to becoming a successful programmer are to take advantage of all of your resources and to stay up to date of the technologies as they change. I believe that a degree in software design and programming, from The University of Denver University College, will prepare me to become a strong programmer and information technology professional.
