Mathematics as a subject fascinated me during my high school. This motivated me to pursue engineering for my undergraduate studies, I got admission in Vishwakarma Institute of Technology, Pune, which is ranked as one of the top engineering college under University of Pune. My interest in algorithms and programming languages inspired me to choose computer science as my major. This decision paved the way to get exposure in my interest areas and build on my technical and analytical skills. The guidance of an experienced faculty along with an exhaustive and rigorous interdisciplinary curriculum helped me to identify and work on my interest areas.
During the first 4 semesters I was introduced to core mathematics subjects of Engineering Mathematics
I, II, III and Numerical Methods & Simulation. These subjects covered topics of Statistics, Calculus and Linear Algebra. I found these courses very stimulating and felt that I had the intellect required to understand and apply the various mathematical concepts to data sets and problem solving. The study of comprehensive courses such as object oriented programming, data structures and algorithms, database management systems and computer networks gave me a firm foundation and prepared me well for core competencies expected of an IT professional.
My engineering course together with my inbuilt quantitative abilities created my interest in the field of business analytics. After his visit to a Shell Research Laboratory, my high school teacher in math told us in class that he was so happy with his education, because mathematics had helped him to understand the explanations and demonstrations that had been given by the Shell researchers. He said, "If you master mathematics then you can understand everything." That was certainly an exaggeration, but it nevertheless sounded like a golden message. Since I definitely wanted to have a better understanding of what was going on around me, mathematics seemed the obvious way to go. Also, if it was not much beyond high school math, then it was pretty easy in addition. What could one wish more? So I enrolled in every advanced math class offered in our high school. Pretty soon I discovered that mathematics was much more than a set of principles that helped one to solve intellectual riddles. It was not a finished system that one could aim to master after some limited time, but it was really a way of thinking, a means of expressing creativity: endless, an old established science, but still fresh and with undiscovered green meadows, nearby and far away.
