Statement of Purpose
I have always found the simplistic pleasure of solving a challenging problem to be most satisfying. The journey of discovering solutions brings its own joys and learning. I aim to pursue a career in research, because it brings with it intellectual challenges and opportunities to innovate. I am, therefore, highly motivated to pursue graduate studies in Computer Science.
During my time at IIT Kanpur, where the curriculum offers flexibility in terms of elective courses, I have striven to explore diverse fields through courses and projects. This has led me to explore the areas of Databases, Machine Learning, Data Mining, Game Theory, Speech Recognition, Algorithms and Computer Engineering apart from the stipulated compulsory disciplines that Electrical Engineering has to offer.
My first experience of research was in the form of a summer project under Prof. Arnab Bhattacharya at IIT Kanpur in which we worked on finding caching techniques for skylines on probabilistic datasets. A very rewarding experience resulted in us continuing our work in a research course and acted as one of the first stimulants for me to pursue research.
During my second year, I was fortunate to have been selected for a 15-day Winter School organized by the Carnegie Mellon University at MS Ramaiah Institute of Technology, Bangalore. It was here that I was introduced to the area of Computer Science that has captured my interest the most – Machine Learning. To be involved in research with some of the premier faculty and researchers was an immensely enriching experience. Prof. Bhiksha Raj (Carnegie Mellon University) and Prof. M. Chikerur (MSRIT) mentored us in developing a feedback and review system for test-based learning. Here, we attempted ...

...arch career. An active research group with experienced advisors and motivated colleagues would help me in gaining maximum from my graduate studies. Searching for such an environment with strong research culture has led me to apply for a PhD at University of California, Los Angeles.
My extra-curricular experience has enhanced my written, oral and interpersonal communication skills, while providing opportunities for leadership and self-motivation. I believe that my academic preparation and experience of working in various projects makes me an accomplished and motivated candidate who can contribute to the field of Computer Science. Through my experience of tutoring students (while being a part of Counselling Service, IIT Kanpur) and the enthusiasm to overcome challenges, I hope to add value to my research group.
Looking forward to be a part of research group at UCLA.
Throughout my undergraduate education in Computer Engineering, in Thailand, my coursework involved a mix of subjects between Computer Sciences and Electronics, including computer programming, algorithm design, electronic circuit design, all involving heavy use of applied engineering mathematics such as Probability, Numerical Methods, Discrete Math and Calculus.

I was first exposed to the world of robots and computers when I took a course on Lego Mindstorms. We worked on various projects including a sumo wrestling robot that participated in a tournament in which the objective was to battle other robots and push them out of the ring. It was a very fun experience. I would continue coding the robot after class, sometimes almost missing lunch! We even made it to the finals and scored second place.
As a result of this project, my organisation, computer skills were greatly improved. Additionally, my knowledge of the research process and its implications were improved. In hindsight, my post-graduate degree was very challenging but rewarding. What was essential to its completion was remaining motivated through stressful situations. I gained valuable skills as a result including excellent time-management and organization skills due to working on numerous project simultaneously, skills I know are necessary for this post.
Needless to say, that I will bring my, as yet small body of work, intellectual curiosity and desire to contribute to the society, with me, when I partake in the REU and URECA Programs, along with the Senior Honors Project. My work experience, ability to think like an owner, take full responsibility of the deliverable and sound time and crises management skills, will prove useful for my cohorts, when we work on projects, workshops and in seminars. Furthermore, having undertaken independent inquiry, I will be the right research partner for my group. Moreover, my experience of completing given tasks in optimal time; delivering flaw-free products, will serve me well, as I continue to do the same. Moreover, collaborative work is second nature to me, as I work with teams of people of different age groups and ethnicities.
“Innovation, Positive Thinking, Persistence and Integrity” are the pillars on which I have built the foundations of my life. My ultimate goal is to pursue an academic career devoted to research and help shape the outlook of the world. Pursuing a PhD in Information Technology & Management at (an Ivy League) University is a logical step in that direction.
Being the top student in my secondary school (with 85.5%), I got admitted into Electronics & Instrumentation Engineering at MIT, Ujjain. My curriculum enhanced my knowledge in Microprocessors, Digital Signal Processing, and Analytical and Industrial Instrumentation. Having a strong zeal towards Information System and Computer Programming, I have also learned different languages like C, C++, SQL and PL/SQL.
After taking the extremely difficult decision to discontinue my studies of Computer Science at Imperial College London, returning to the academic world to study Computing has been my greatest desire and challenge. My guiding principle has been my passion to keep learning about and using Computers and Mathematics.
Everything I have learned throughout my life, whether if it were online courses or Genesys Works’, have and will continue to contribute massively to my future as they have broadened my chances of having a career in software engineering. In part, software development and engineering consists of communicating with others working towards a single goal. Furthermore, my single goal consists of influencing the world, whether with a team or not, to somehow better someone’s
Computers and Technology have fascinated me right from my childhood and I have always had it in my mind to choose Information Technology for my engineering. As the years passed my eagerness grew and so did my thirst to attain higher education and now is the perfect time for me to ignite the spark in me. This has given me the courage to analyze the fact that I have a herculean task ahead in order to comprehend an extensive proportion of subject and enjoy it while assimilating the problems.
...urity would make my experience at University of Southern California a challenging and an exciting one.
I believe after learning in depth about Adaptive Algorithms and Natural Language Processing, I shall manage to leap towards R&D division of major IT organizations. With the driving force to prove my worth and stand out in every aspect I can ensure to extract the maximum from the knowledge that I will gain in this reputed University. With this aspiration and dream to make it bigger in life I would wish to put forward my candidacy for attaining a Masters of Science in Computer Science at University of Texas, Dallas.
This chapter discussed the reflection on the project and the wider implications of the project, and demonstrated the reflection on the MA experience. In a word, the major project and the MA experience gave me an extraordinary chance to carry on the higher education and learn new and advanced learning skills.
Now, on the brink of completing my first year of university studies, I look forward to my future. Having been captivated by computation and mathematics since a young age, I intend to attend graduate school, eventually attaining a doctorate in computer science, delving into research in high-performance computing, computer graphics, or algorithm analysis. Following this, my ideal position would be one in which I am able to pursue my innate love, problem solving. Whether in industry or academia, I hope to be able to dedicate myself to developing novel solutions to computational problems of all types.
I am very thankful for providing me this opportunity and it is with sincere sense of gratification that I pen down my brief statement of purpose. Striving for betterment and improvement has been my motto in all aspects of life and the same applies even to my professional and academic career. Getting to know what goes inside computers, the engines of the Information Technology revolution and knowing how to work with them enables one to understand the technology that makes it all possible. Understanding this, I chose to do my undergraduate study in Information Technology. While reasoning my intentions to pursue MS in Computer Science at your esteemed university, I would like to throw some light on my career till now.
