Star Wars – the making of episode III documentary By SHANICE D’COSTA Pre-Production: When you watch this episode of Star Wars, what everyone is waiting to watch is the most important, exciting scene in the whole movie – The duel between Darth Vader and Obi-Wan Kenobi. When that’s up on the screen, you aren’t wondering how it’s made or how many hours it takes to make one sequence, a sequence that is virtually over within a few minutes. No one realises how much work actually goes into these films, until the behind the scenes are shown. Producer Rick McCallum, works with the imagination of the film, George Lucas. Making sure that the actors are supplied with everything they need for their characterisation and to help them with their acting. The props team also makes sure that when the actors have their props they don’t hurt themselves. The great result of how a character presents him or herself is through the costumes, but a costume designer’s job is much more important than that. The costumes can contribute to the setting of the scene, and it is an important way of setting the emotion in the scene. There are all these different people making sure that the seams are fitting and that the clothes look old and rugged, or even distressed. With The Duel scene, Darth Vader and Obi-Wan Kenobi are fighting over lava so their costumes would gradually look burnt in that scene. The teams job is to take all the art departments’ art designs and bring all their art to life, they mix and match things together with live action stuff along with the art designs they have gotten from the “Art Department”. The Pre-Visualization department basically builds everything in 3D, texturize, lighten and edit everything in a fundamental basic manner, so that it’s done easily and fast. George can just walk in and say he has a new idea and they could make quick changes. George has had many ideas, and most of the people who edit things do what he says and plan around with his ideas, until he says “I like this, lets finalize it!” working with the different teams is almost like working with the actors, the director gets a performance and then the discuss ideas to make the final product the best thing
