Fredrik Heiding S.J. In order to give an account of Bonaventure’s view of the triune God and creation it is important to have brief understanding of Saint Bonaventure’s biographical context. Bonaventure joined the established Franciscan Order in 1243, seventeen years after the passionate founder’s death. During his lifetime, St. Francis enthusiastically performed the Gospel. He shaped his own life to a biblical framework focusing on a very human Christ rather than the divine figure.
St. Augustine considers his mother as a crucial factor in his conversion to Catholicism. However, through the analysis of his confessions, it leads me to believe that St. Augustine’s mother was not a decisive figure. Monica was in the background keeping him in thought and prayer, however Augustine’s watershed moments came as a result of his own examination of readings as well as his conversations with his friends and mentors. Therefore, I argue that Monica had delayed Augustine’s baptism and it was his own experiences that allowed him to come to God. Baptizing a baby at birth was a common practice during the time when Augustine was born.

In Paul Tillich’s 1957 work Dynamics of Faith, he mentions that there are six major components of faith. These six components of faith describe the Franciscan perspective of “faith”. According to Tillich, the first component of faith is “the state of being ultimately concerned”. The second component of faith is that it is supposed to be at the center of all of our personal lives and everything that we do throughout our own individual lives. The third component of faith is that we should have an awareness for “infinite” things such as God himself.
St. Teresa was born in Avila, Spain on March 28, 1515. She was baptized as Teresa Sanchez de Cepeda y Ahumada. At a young age she would often give gifts to the poor and pray. Her father and her mother were both Catholics which inspired her to do the same. Her father was a very strict man a demanded her to never lie, while her mother told her to lie and comforted her. This created a ton of turmoil in the family and made St. Teresa end up loving her mother more due to her father’s severe strictness. St. Teresa felt that everything she was doing was wrong. During her teens her mother passed away leaving her to deal with her father by herself and she was relieved of some of the pain by turning to the Virgin Mary for comfort. In her late teen years
All human beings develop at different rates physically and mentally. Furthermore, there are some special characters that gain the ability to flourish in which they acquire a deeper understanding of life. This is usually as a result of one’s profound religious beliefs. Such as the disciples of Jesus Christ, they at some point of their life followed the teachings of Christ; subsequently, their beliefs allowed them to gain a deeper meaning of life. In this reading we will focus on the life of Francis, specifically on how he flourishes into Saint Frances. Saint Francis was an interesting character, which allows us to visualize how he matures from his self-indulging lifestyle into a humanitarian.
St. Boniface, originally named Winfrith, was an extremely studious man, a converted monk, priest, missionary and finally martyr. Born in 672, near Exeter, England, St. Boniface at an early age developed a desire to follow the path of God and live a monastic life. Through non-stop prayer and religious practices, he tuned his mind and body to reach beyond the obstacles and enticements of everyday life at his young adult age. He was a major influence on society during his life and affected the lives and history of Germany permanently. Often called the “Apostle of Germany”, St. Boniface was a strong believer in the principles of the Church and truly wanted to open any pagan believers minds to the knowledgeable and rewarding path of the Christian life.

Elizabeth was named after St. Elizabeth of Hungary.She lived in Portugal and was married at the young age of 12, to king Denis of Portugal, in the year 1282. St. Elizabeth was very religious as a child and a wife, she attended mass and prayed at least twice everyday. Even though she was faithful to God her husband was not as devoted, his sins of impurity brought St.Elizabeth great suffering.

In particular, the Women’s Building offered a microcosm of the prejudices that dominated the overall landscape of the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition. Although the men who organized the Columbian Exposition were unable to exclude women’s achievements altogether from the exposition, they were successful in relegating them into a bounded unit that overwhelmingly categorized their contributions as different and marginal, framing womanliness as “soft,” “delicate,” and “refined.” Discussions of the Women’s Building’s architectural aesthetics highlights such gendered dimensions of the Columbian Exposition quite clearly.

In the year 203 Perpetua became a Christian even though she could be killed, because Christians were being persecuted. Her father was worried for her safety and tried to talk her out of converting. At this time, Perpetua was well educated and had baby boy, but it is assumed that she is a widow. Her father continued to dissuade her from converting, but she kept on saying she was a Christian. Her father was so mad she converted, that he attacked her. After the attack she was arrested and imprisoned. Four other catechumens, and a catechist were arrested with or prior to Perpetua. Perpetua was baptized before being taken to prison, and had a conversation with God. At the time of her baptism the Lord told her to pray for endurance during her trial. The prison she was put in was overcrowded and had little light. She was very afraid, but she was very upset to be separated from her baby. Babe Ruth, considered one of the greatest baseball players to play the game of baseball, who never cheated and set a great example for all who play baseball. Baseball has drastically changed over the years, especially in the cheating scandals of steroids; Babe Ruth set a great example by excelling in the sport and doing it clean, contrasting with Mark McGwire. Their existence shows how society accepted honesty and doing it the clean way in Babe’s era and how society accepts the scandals and dishonesty of Mark’s era.

How would you feel if your devoted dog was discriminated against based only on what he looked like? Canine breed discrimination is a real problem in today’s society in the United States. There is always an enormous amount of hype when one hears about a dog attack. The first thing people want to know is what kind of dog was involved in the attack. That breed of dog then gets labeled as “dangerous”, quietly forcing people to change their opinion on a certain breed based on an action of only a couple of dogs.
Saint Francis of Assisi was a uniquely spiritual man who gave up a life of wealth and position to lead a life of poverty in accordance and service to God. Embracing a life according to the Gospels, Francis went on to establish a Monastic Order, known as the Franciscans. In the midst of the political climate within the religious community of Italy, Francis emerged a champion for the poor and sick, with humility and no regard for himself. Francis exhibited his love for God through his love and admiration for all of God's creation including nature. The principles of Saint Francis are as relevant today as they were in thirteenth century Italy; service and love to all of God’s creation.
