Humans live in a world rich of abundant elements and ideas that make each and every one of us identify ourselves part of particular groups. Our beliefs, ideas, religions, languages, as well as many other elements become the core of these groups. These groups are what we refer to as culture. Throughout history we have seen that many elements have spread throughout the world due to historic events and thus have influenced other cultures. Geographers know this as cultural diffusion. The constant mixing of global cultures through the spread of religion and language has increased more so with the advancements in communications and technologies.

It is considered to be a proselytic faith because it is determined to constantly seek and convert people. Through its active conversion of new members, the religion expands and seeks out for more people. The hearth of Christianity comes from southwestern Asia, where they are influenced by the patriarch known as Abraham. Christianity began in southwestern Asia and worked its way through the Old World. The spread of Christianity is shown in figure 7.14 page 245 of The Human Mosaic. The figure shows the origin of Christianity, which is Jerusalem, and shows the spread of the religion. Judaism is the founding religion of Christianity. They both share elements such as the Torah ( the Old Testament), prayers and components of the Bible. Christianity has become divided into many different smaller sections since its founding. The major sections from this division are Protestants, Roman Catholics, and Eastern Christians. Roman Catholics and Protestants were both discovered in Rome and the surrounding Latin-speaking areas. Christianity, in search of new members, spread itself out through western Europe and successfully converted people. The Eastern Christians influenced the Greek. The 1400s and 1500s were times of religious reformation. The Western Christianity found itself divided once again due to the beginning of Protestantism during the Reformation. Like religion, language is also brought along with cultural groups when they migrate. Language is a system of communication that is composed of symbols which are used to speak or write expressions. Language has become the key to expansion such as development and economic growth. Lingua francas are languages accepted worldwide as the preferred language of communication for commerce use. They are not necessarily the mother tongue of the specific location, the lingua francas are ones recognized by most to be the universal languages for communication and economical purposes. Arabic, English, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, French, Chinese, and Russian are considered linguas francas. Language is classified by word choice, methods of pronunciation, grammar use, and speech pace. Language families analyze and evaluate the diversity and diffusion of a certain Language. Language families are groups of languages said to be related and sharing the same ancestor. The Indo-European language family is the largest, most spread family. It is spoken in every continent and is commonly seen in Europe, North/South America, Russia, Australia, and sections of Asia and India. Subfamilies of the Indo-European family such as Romance, Iranic, and Germanic are divided once more into individual languages. English comes from the Germanic subfamily which is part of the English subgroup. Our language is then part of the American subgroup with further divides
