Special Place Land Revisited One of the main features in Mazeppa, is the Zumbro River that cuts through the town. The Zumbro River is spring fed, and is mainly mature with a few spots where it may become youthful. Another feature that Mazeppa has is the rock bluffs around the area. The bluffs are mainly made of sandstone and limestone. These rocks were formed on and near the shore of the beach in Hollandale Embayment. This means that this area was once either on a coastal shore or near a shore. Due to the sandstone in the area, some of the main resources that Mazeppa has to offer is gravel and sand. Within the town, there is a gravel or sand pit, as well as other pits around the area. Along with it being near a shore, the land may have been …show more content…

One of the main natural forces that affect my special place is the Zumbro River, which is eroding back into the valley. The river is in a deep, narrow valley with wooded areas around it (“Zumbro River”). All along the river route, there are cut banks and point bars. Another natural force that also plays a role in shaping my special place is mass wasting. Occasionally, rock slides will occur around Mazeppa, usually involving small rocks, but once in a while boulders will fall as well. Although it hasn’t been anything that major, it still occurs. In some areas around my special place, the edges of roads have washed away due to erosion and changing landscapes. Mass wasting may also help to explain why houses settle and have had foundation problems. Another natural force that affects Mazeppa and the area around it is plate tectonics. Although my special place is not directly affected by plate tectonics today, due to it not being on a plate boundary, it does affect my special place because the surface is ever changing due to plate tectonics and it moves the ground short distances each year. Weathering and erosion also occurs and will wear down the layers of rock throughout the area. Wind and water also play a role in eroding the banks of the river and the cliffs …show more content…

To help counteract the bank erosion along the part of the river that cuts through the town, people have filled in parts of the river with rock, as well as leveling the banks of the river to make it more of a slope. The goal in this was to slow down the erosion rates and to try and control the river. When the town decided to build a dam, the sediment that the river will typically move, piled up behind the dam and was unable to go through. Now that the dam isn’t there anymore, the sediment is able to flow down the river to different areas. Due to the fact that there is human development in this area, there is silt and chemicals, along with other substances that are dumped into the river from the towns and farmers upstream, which can affect the plants and animals. These pollutants include pesticides and manure, as well as other wastes. According to Minnesota’s Pollution Control Agency, the main impairment of the Zumbro River near Mazeppa is turbidity (“Minnesota’s Impaired Waters and TMDLS”). All of these pollutants can cause health risks if they get into the drinking water, along with causing plants and animals to
