When I think of Southwest, I think of warm smiles, excellence, and innovation. What sets Southwest apart from other airlines and companies in general is its commitment—to its customers, its employees, and to excellence. Southwest’s commitment to its customers is evident through its exceptional customer service and experience. I had the opportunity to fly Southwest quite a bit last summer, and every flight was a pleasant experience. I especially appreciated the (often humorous) remarks from the captain that would calm the nerves of anxious flyers and get everyone to smile a bit. In addition, all the flight attendants were so helpful and always ensured that the overall mood of the flight was happy and relaxed; however, Southwest’s commitment to its customers does not end with its customer-facing roles—it begins there. Throughout the company, Southwest pursues excellence for the customer. Southwest expects a lot from its employees and accepts nothing less than the best, but also gives the best to their employees. Southwest has worked hard to create a culture of warmth and excellence. Employees are treated well and with respect, and they are expected to treat others (customers and their fellow employees [and people in general]) with that same warmth and respect. Southwest expects excellence from their employees in their work, but is also lavish in its generosity towards its employees and fosters an excellent culture and environment for them to work, learn, and grow.
