“Gangsta’s Paradise” is a satirical song about gang life written and performed by Artis Leon Ivey Jr., or better known as Coolio. In this hit song from the 90s, Coolio reflects on the struggle of growing up in an environment heavily influenced by gangs as was commonplace in neighborhoods of poverty at the time as well as today. He highlights the regret one can have with the decisions they make in their life. The topic of death in this song emphasizes the magnitude certain decisions possess. In conclusion, “Gangsta’s Paradise” is really an ironic title because the song is not referring to a paradise, but rather it illustrates to the sadistic truth of the street life. Choices make people who they are, and often times, children who inhabit societies practically run by gangs make the mistake of joining one. Coolio captures this in his song with the lines, “I can't live a normal life, I was raised by the streets/ So I gotta be down with the hood team.” He portrays that once a person is in a gang, there is no escape.
