Identity theft is an issue that is currently not getting enough attention from law enforcement, and the criminals are getting small sentences such as parole and community service. Since the consequences for the criminal is small, many violent criminals are now moving on to identity theft because they know that it will be harder for law enforcement to investigate without proper resources. Many people in today’s society do not realize how terrible the consequences of identity theft are, such as financial problems and credit issues. The author answers many difficult questions that a person may have while learning about this issue. She warns her audience about the time consuming recovery process, saying how there are, “400 steps you have to do,” and goes on to say, “You’re just on your own.” It is hard for many victims to get the help they desperately need, since law enforcement simply does not have the time to investigate all of the numerous identity theft cases. Shin provides great advice for people who suspect they are dealing with an identity theft criminal and says to, “Take meticulous notes: the date, who you talked to, what they said. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had to refer back to my notes.” She explains how taking notes can help the victim take control of the situation and stay ahead of the criminal. Although it may seem like the world is coming to an end, Shin explains how it only takes one mistake for the criminal to blow their whole cover. In this passage from the novel Between the World and Me, Ta-Nehisi Coates utilizes meaningful, vivid imagery to not only stress the chasm between two dissonant American realities, but to also bolster his clarion for the American people to abolish the slavery of institutional or personal bias against any background. For example, Coates introduces his audience to the idea that the United States is a galaxy, and that the extremes of the "black" and "white" lifestyles in this galaxy are so severe that they can only know of each other through dispatch (Coates 20-21). Although Coates's language is straightforward, it nevertheless challenges his audience to reconsider a status quo that has maintained social division in an unwitting yet ignorant fashion.
Throughout the course of this novel, Ishmael Beah keeps the readers on the edge of their seat by incorporating interchanging tones. At the beginning of the novel, the tone can be depicted as naïve, for Beah was unaware to what was actually occurring with the rebels. Eventually, the tone shifts to being very cynical and dark when he depicts the fighting he has endured both physically and mentally. However, the most game changing tone is towards the end of the novel in chapters nineteen and twenty. His tone can be understood as independent or prevailing. It can be portrayed as independent because Beah learns how to survive on his own and to take care of himself. In the book Into the Wild, Jon Krakauer wrote about Christopher McCandless, a nature lover in search for independence, in a mysterious and hopeful experience. Even though Krakauer tells us McCandless was going to die from the beginning, he still gave him a chance for survival. As a reader I wanted McCandless to survive. In Into the Wild, Krakauer gave McCandless a unique perspective. He was a smart and unique person that wanted to be completely free from society. Krakauer included comments from people that said McCandless was crazy, and his death was his own mistake. However, Krakauer is able to make him seem like a brave person. The connections between other hikers and himself helped in the explanation of McCandless’s rational actions. Krakauer is able to make McCandless look like a normal person, but unique from this generation. In order for Krakauer to make Christopher McCandless not look like a crazy person, but a special person, I will analyze the persuading style that Krakauer used in Into the Wild that made us believe McCandless was a regular young adult.
Sister Helen Prejean, author of Dead Man Walking is a multi-faceted character and person. Her opinions on equality, racism, governmental and justice systems are cultivated and intellectual, truly brought forth in her writing. In this first chapter, Prejean begins her journey of understanding the corrupt systems of government, and their unjust practices such as the death penalty, through this she seeks to help those affected by the unjustness of the systems. Her use of logos, pathos, and ethos through strategies such as presenting statistics, descriptions of memories and explanations of religious ties help her opinion become prominent throughout the chapter.

Each of the sites I visited during the course of my personal investigation, productive for the criminal investigation or not, contributed to the peace of mind and confidence I now feel. Fraudulent bills and collection notices continue to arrive in the mail but no longer intimidate me.
