Solutions to the Abortion Problem in America
Abortion in America is a huge issue that is causing much turmoil between the communities in America. Some people feel this way and some people feel another. I am personally for pro-choice, which means I am against abortion unless it is to save a mothers life due to medical problems. Through research I found that there are many things available that are being done to try and cut the rate of abortion in America and yet I feel that there is still so much more that can be done. Just to name a few things that are being done: pray, sidewalk counseling (slightly goes along with prayer) this is where they try to convince the mother not to have an abortion one last time right before they go into the clinic, networking, volunteer at local CPC, and picket abortion mills, protestors stand outside of abortion clinics and with signs and pictures to give their opinions on abortion.
The government is now getting involved against abortions by trying to make abortions illegal in America. President Bush has signed a law that bans partial birth abortion. Troy Newman, the director of Operation Rescue, says that there is still a loop hole in this law. He says “it fallaciously includes a loop-hole exception to save the mother’s life that many abortionists have routinely abused when included in other legislation.” The government getting involved is a great thing. Making abortions illegal is bound to make the rate of abortion lower. Newman also includes in his article “Baby Steps to Victory” that there are other things to do with a child if the mother does not want it. Most are too afraid to talk about this due to the fact that they don’t want to be looked upon badly for talking about an issue that is usually a “hush-hush” topic. So I encourage you to please stand up and say what you think, feel, and believe towards this issue and help us all fight to stop abortions in America before it becomes a tragic epidemic like teen pregnancies.

During George Romero’s interview with Steven Mackenzie, Romero was asked for his opinions on why zombies are trending (James, 2013). Romero’s opinions are “they are hot and they have become a huge business, economic engine” (James, 2013). Romero is acknowledged as the “father of zombies” ;therefore, Mackenzie asks his opinion on how he feels about his nickname. Romero answers this question by criticizing Brooks’s film stating, “The walking dead is just a soap opera with the occasional zombie and I did not want any part of it” (James, 2013). Zombie literature in its current form has been around since the early 1920’s, the concept of the “Zombie” itself originated in the nation of Haiti around the same time. Since it’s inception, the purpose of the zombie genre is to commentate on social issues during many periods of human history. These periods include World War II, the Vietnam War, and the Cold War. The zombie has represented several things from the nuclear bomb, to the collective fears of humanity in general, such as the fear of death and of dying. Zombies have also been represented as a physical manifestation of the flaws of humanity, such as mindless, joyless consumerism. (McGregor)
There is no denying that zombies are popular they are popping up everywhere from movies to video games and more. But why, what lies behind this braindead form of entertainment. Many of us just carry about our lives and never truly ask ourselves what makes zombies popular, what do they stand for, what are they all about. Zombies are a metaphor, they are humans who have lost what gives us dominance over the animal world, our powerful brain. Throughout the zombie narratives the authors argued that zombies represent man who has lost motivation, to achieve and how the unmotivated form bandwagons that many weak minded jump onto.
Zombies are disgusting, zoned out monsters with skin that is generally pale and falling off and they are often missing limbs. They stumble around with no sense of direction and one intention, to eat the flesh of any creature with a heartbeat. Vampires on the other hand are attractive, sexual, and graceful monsters who suck the blood of humans with the intention of creating new vampires. The origin of zombies comes from Haitian voodoo, where “zombie” translates to “spirit of the dead”. It was believed that a voodoo priest could give a person a powder known as coup padre that would make a person appear to be dead. The public would burn this person, believing they were dead, and the voodoo priest would exhume the body which would be physically intact but have no memory and become a mindless drone of the voodoo priest. The origin of vampires comes from Europe in 1347 at the start of the Black Plague. Vampires were created to explain the Black Plague and how the disease spread. It was believed that if a person died and had a second soul, the second soul would walk the earth, killing the person’s family and friends and eventually everyone in the town. Although zombies and vampires are completely different in almost every way possible, they both express society’s conscious and unconscious fears and anxieties and transcend social norms and taboos.
Abortion may be one of the most controversial topics in America today. Abortion is defined as “the termination of a pregnancy after, accompanied by, resulting in, or closely followed by the death of the embryo or fetus” (cite dictionary). There are really only two sides on people’s opinion on abortion; pro-life which means abortion should be outlawed and pro-choice which means a woman should be able to decide whether she wants to keep her baby. Thousands of protests and riots have begun due to the fact pro-life activists believe abortion should become illegal. Both sides bring valid points to support their decision that could sway any person’s thoughts. The Roe v. Wade law has allowed abortion to be legal in the U.S since 1973 (Chittom & Newton, 2015). At first glance, modern zombie movie seem to be about the fear of disease. The zombie movies today feature the “infected” type of zombie being used as the most common, but what threat the zombies really show in the movies are not about the zombies infecting everyone, but the sheer numbers of them. Today’s biggest problem is overpopulation, people are reproducing so fast and so much that overcrowding is starting to appear. People are starting to leave the idea that the world is going to look like a desolate wasteland behind. Instead the end of the world is going to look like most zombie movies do, hordes of people mindlessly swarming everywhere. Even in the old zombie movies the fear that zombies represented was fear of the masses or mobs, than they were about disease, though that was part of it. People know that the world is overcrowded and it is almost like everyone is on their tiptoes waiting for a zombie-like disease to break out. It is saddening to see humans of the female gender, who find themselves in a situation that requires introducing a new life into the world; to abort such a precious gift. Many may wonder how these poor, innocent, unborn children are then discarded after the abortion procedure. One cannot fathom the reason of these gruesome murders that happens within these medical facilities. Babies are disposed in the red waste bins of these facilities, and later incinerated. Some may either be flushed down garbage disposals or even be sold off for research purposes. The issue of abortion is not just a social one, but also a human rights issue among the unborn children. I believe if the human rights of these children has been violated, then all other rights of humans are certainly meaningless.
There is no doubt that there are major benefits to this. “The discussions and debates would be endless but the past of the present natural or man-made, technological evolution or not, I believe it’s the basic human relationship that binds us together” (Lucksom). As young teens pilot this strange world, they are developing the expertise that is vital to their educational success and, eventually, their ability to compete in this global economy.
