Softball Reflection

Softball has never been a sport that has been of great interest to me and I had never attended a game prior to watching the Fighting Illini Softball team. I did not really have any impressions regarding the softball team other than some opinions from our class saying that overall they are not a very strong team and have struggled in the past in terms of stats and accumulating fans. Similar to the women’s basketball team I believe that the sport is not really respected and therefore not college students want to attend the games. Most of the audience members were either fans of the opposing team, Eastern Illinois University, or older retirees that I have noticed support Fighting Illini Athletics no matter the record of the team or the score. …show more content…

This was different from baseball because, as opposed to the almost silent baseball game, the softball game was much louder and gave audience members the opportunity to get excited and pumped during the game. Whether it was communication during plays between players or the support and chants that could be heard from the dugouts I really enjoyed how vocal all the women are in order to support their fellow team members. The chants that I heard were nothing but encouraging and positive. These chants enhanced my experience because they showed that no matter the score the women are proud of one another and encouraging, they are stronger than their …show more content…

I am glad that I attended the game because it finally gave me a chance in order to see what a softball game looks like in general. One suggestion that I would have in order to attract a larger audience to the games is to advertise more in the community by possibly having team members going to local middle and elementary schools. Something that the players could do when visiting the school would be to teach kids how to play softball during a gym period or to read a story or poem about baseball/softball during a reading class. Doing this would bring more awareness to the softball team both in schools and when kids share what they did in school to their parents. The players could even bring coupons that would give the kids a free game and possibly a discount off of merchandise at the stand during a game. One thing that could be done to attract more UIUC students would be to advertise more on campus, either have more posters with the social media and weekly “star” players named or to have a pick-up game of softball on the Quad during a nice spring day. This would lead to more interaction with the players and would bring more awareness to the team overall on a collegiate
