A social script is a sequence of actions expected of an individual in certain situations that varies across times and cultures. Throughout life, people use observational learning in their daily activities to build societal schemas for their behaviors. Ranging from mourning practices to grocery store etiquette, there are social scripts encoded into virtually every transaction we make, whether we are aware of them or not. I recently began taking classes at a traditional yoga studio in Bellingham. The studio is a walk-up with vaulted ceilings and one large intimidatingly beautiful. Throughout Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng the main character Lydia Lee faces change, change that will impact not only her life negatively, but also the lives of her family. Lydia has the most significant role throughout the book, she is the backbone of the Lee family. For Lydia’s parents, they view their daughter as a way they can live their unachieved dreams through, for Marilyn she believed she can live her dream of becoming a doctor through Lydia, while James wanted Lydia to be popular in her school. However, those dreams were lost after Lydia’s death. Lydia’s role as the backbone of the Lee family influences the idea of keeping secrets can destroy a family.

This particularly yoga class was taught by a college student from State University named Kim. She stated that she is in training to become an official yoga instructor and that this class was the first one that she was teach at the Recreation Center. It is an exercise class that was intended to make your mind and body feel at peace as you stretch and do strength training. Yoga is meant to be very calming and spiritual. Everyone in the class appeared to be college student, there were mostly girls and few boys, only the instructor spoke during the class, and everyone made sure that they had their own personal space through the class to make sure they had enough room to move.
In the story My Favorite Chaperone, by Jean Davies Okimoto, I believe the theme is how working together makes life's struggles easier. The characters show this theme throughout the story. As children immigrants, the main characters struggle with combining a new culture with their family culture to find a new identity without bringing shame to their family. In the story, Maya, the main character, faces issues in how to fit in with a new world in America. In this new world there are different rules and expectations while she still has to respect and follow her family's traditions and rules. Delicatessen tells the story of a post-apocalyptic world where many people are starving and are forced to take extreme measures to survive. The film fallows a group of people living in an apartment building run by the butcher who owns it. To survive this group of people have resulted to cannibalism. The dark subject matter in the film may prevent some viewers from appreciating the comedy hidden within; however, it is also what gives this film a unique feel and make the comedic elements have a greater impact on most viewers. Dark Comedies demonstrate the importance of balancing humor and seriousness in order provide a truly enjoyable film.
Noah is the one of the main characters of The Notebook. He is the hero of this novel. Noah represents true love and true loyalty. In a way, The Notebook is similar to every modern day romance movie, and Noah represents the “dream man” that all the girls always imagine of having. The characters in movies are used to symbolize ideas, and in this novel, Noah represents true, faithful, committed love. Noah remains loyal to Allie even in the situation where he is unsure whether they will ever meet again or not.
In the short story of "The Story of an Hour" by Kate Chopin, it opens on the news that Mrs. Mallard's husband, Brently Mallard, had died in a railroad accident: "Knowing that Mrs. Mallard was afflicted with a heart trouble, great care was taken to break to her as gently as possible the news of her husband's death" (Chopin 1). Not much about the protagonist is known except that she has heart trouble. The tone of hesitation and sadness in the story is set within the first sentence along with an uneasiness about Mrs. Mallard's condition.
Yoga is not something that you do at the studio and leave behind. It becomes a way of life; leading to healthier habits, improving psychological health, and encouraging spiritual growth. Feldman says; "It means learning and using relational skills which you intentionally build into your daily interactions: taking time to listen to, and learn about who your partner is; learning how to make agreements; learning how to set boundaries; learning how to use skillful language when you are speaking and being able to identify your feelings and speak them out without losing your temper or perspective (16-20). " Yoga can be described as the practice of holding different poses, and using different breathing techniques that strengthens the mind and body, by bringing the practitioner into a new state of awareness. The practice of yoga increases blood flow to internal organs, brings more oxygen to the cells in your body, while strengthening and calming the nervous system.
The goal of this study was to identify the ways in which engaging in yoga practices would alter psychological well being, and allow people to engage more fully in their lives and flourish in health and happiness. The pre and post test set up of this study allowed the researchers to see the ways in which students had been affected by their participation in the yoga teacher training. Yoga training students were engaged in a four week program. They were administered tests and the beginning of the study, prior to engaging in the program, at the end of the program, after completion, and then again at a 3 month follow up.
