“Managing physical distance can be difficult in all types of personal relationships” (Sahlstein, 2006, pg. 2). Social Penetration Theory and Uncertainty Reduction Theory can be applied to long-distance relationships to better understand why these relationships are more difficult and why conflict arises in certain situations. Social penetration and self-disclosure are important to make any relationship work, but with long-distance relationships it is even more critical. “Relationships develop through the reciprocal exchange of information, beginning with relatively non-intimate topics and gradually progressing to more personal and private topics” (Cassell and Bickmore, 2003, pg. 94). By not having the luxury of face-to-face communication, due to the distance, maintaining the relationship can be more difficult because levels of uncertainty can be very high. The couple must learn to reduce uncertainty because “interpersonal relationships develop as participants reduce uncertainty about each other” (Parks & Adelman, 1983, pg. 55). It has been “found that physical distance was an uncertainty-inducing event” (Aylor & Danton, 2001, pg. 175). Insecurity can be felt pertaining to your partner or the relationship if you have a high level of uncertainty in your partner or relationship, and it is likely that you have a hard time trusting the person. This causes internal questioning about the success of the relationship while being long-distance due to the level of trust felt. For this paper, we will be talking about relational communications and Goffman’s terms. The definition of relational communication is “communication processes in personal relationships such as romantic, family, and friendships. We assess the role of communication in developing, maintaining, and dissolving relationships, how communication impacts partners and their relationships, and how to improve relational quality or individual well-being through communication. Recent topics examined include conflict mediation, relational standards, relational uncertainty in dating relationships, and communication environments in families” (n.d.). As it has said, it is about the relationships in our life. Goffman also stated that there was a front and

The term “long-distance relationship” can often carry a negative association for those seeking love. There is a perception that geographical distance will prevent a strong and happy relationship from developing; however, it does not deter all couples from staying together. LDRs are identified by several factors, including: distance, the length of a relationship, and time living apart. Reasons why couples (married or dating) find themselves in LDRs include career, college, military deployment, and/or preference.

Recently, I met a guy at a party. He was very polite and charming to say the least. We have been on three dates in the past two weeks. I obviously do not know him very well, which is why applying Social Penetration Theory is an acceptable approach to analyzing this relationship. We are both very similar and seem to enjoy one another’s company. On the first date, our conversations were slightly awkward. By our third date, we have become more comfortable.
It takes more than words to create a safe, exciting and secure relationship. Too often the signals we send are not those we intend to send. When this happens, both connection and trust are lost in our relationships.

For example, in short distance relationship, it difficult to figure out because sometimes people are only together because of the physical contact. They could just be there during the happy times, but as soon as there are problems, they are willing to end the relationship. However, in long distance relationships, there are no doubts whether or not it is love. If two people are in a relationship without much physical contact it is because there is love.
